I think I might be speaking for every "casual" SMP gamer when I say this: Currently minecraft's pvp is very unfair! The way it is atm, any player with full protection 4 diamond armor, and a god-sword/god-bow, could just run up to a player who has just started the game and kill them in pretty much one-hit. Mojang should implement something to balance pvp so that it appeals to the more fragile-minded "casual" players, while still appealing to the more mature "hardcore" players. This could be something like the following: 1): add a "toggle pvp" button. Terraria has this, why not minecraft? 2): Make it so that players can only attack other players if they have the same kind of gear as the other. Examples include: unenchanted full iron VS unenchanted full iron, OR Enchanted full diamond VS enchanted full diamond, etc. This will make PVP FAR more fair!
FAQ
"ooh then go play on a no pvp server hurr hurr!": Has it not occurred to you that 99% (if not more than that) of all servers on the mcforums are pvp servers? If you fail to realize this, then you should just leave this topic alone! There are seemingly less than 20 no pvp servers on the entire forums! And most of them have minor flaws that we have a hard time adjusting to!
"pfft! Go playcreative mode or single-player then!": I, and probably many others, don't
play single-player because we feel lonely, and have a desire to collaborate, and/or hang out with others. Playing single-player just doesn't have the same feeling to it!
"Get used to it then!": That's a nice excuse you have there, has it not occurred to you that minecraft is supposed to be a children's game? I mean look around! Everything is made up of blocks, animations are very simple and basic (like the arm swing when punching a tree or player.) Do you think that the fragile mind of any 6-year old can handle losing his/her protection 4, diamond armor, along with his Looting 3 Fire Aspect 2 Sharpness 5 diamond god-sword to a jerk who combat-logs every time he starts to lose? Most definitely NOT!

1 is adjustable on servers already with the PvPToggle plugin, and many pure vanilla servers ban non-agreed upon PvP with the honor system. Either way, if a server is a PvP server without the plugin, toggling off PvP basically defeats the purpose of the server. If you go on a "BrutalEpicFactions" or "UltimatePvP" type of server, you go on for PvP action, not trolling other players by not fighting on a server that exists for that purpose.
2 is absolutely ridiculous. That would mean that almost no PvP could even occur in the first place. Half the battle of PvP is preparation. If this were implemented (which it won't be), gear would be so devalued that the entire system of PvP, which is what draws many people to the game, would collapse. Do you really want millions of Minecraft players who love to fight left in the dark, along with thousands of minigame-based servers?
This system would make PvP equal, but it would not make it fair.

I could run up to a guy while I have no armour on, wait for him to turn around, dawn my armour and slash him, take it off and repeat.
I am a dedicated Minecrafter, and because of that, I disagree with this post. There is no reason to go ahead and implement a feature that can easily be incorporated by any server with a plugin. If you don't like any of the existing non-PvP servers (because they all have problems as you said), why not make your own? If your problem is as large as you make it out to be, you should have no trouble getting members for your non-PvP server.
This feature is rather pointless and would take some fun out of anything. There could already be a mod or plugin that does this. Also your first point is entirely wrong, even though there are lots of pvp servers there are still lots of non pvp servers.

Your first point conflicts or is not related to your suggestion or the issue. This is strictly about pvp and balancing it right? Therefor your first point is mostly irrelevant.
What does that have to do with anything or your suggestion? -.-

1. This isn't a children's game
2. 6 year olds shouldn't be on pvp servers and it is the parent's responsibility to monitor their kids.If servers really wanted to balance things so each battle is isolated to iron vs iron or whatever they already would have. Servers are not restricted and the same. They can make up their own policies to combat issues like they can outlaw spawn killing. They can make or install their own plugins and mods.

1. It's unnecessary and probably near useless. If you don't have the gear then you pay the price. If server owners think it's unfair then they can add rules/policies or plugins to handle it. They don't need need this at all really imo.
2. Just because terraria has it doesn't mean minecraft needs one? That is not a valid reason at all.
3. Refer to #1.
4. There are MANY pvp servers that are no where near vanilla format. Heck, there is this one pvp server where the owner made CUSTOM classes. which has custom made spells. The classes are really balanced and many people enjoy that server.
5. Your approach on balancing PVP ( if that is what you are intending ) isn't efficient imo.
Approach huge, nearly impenetrable enemy base on a factions server. Disable PVP and mine into base. Enable PVP, fill base with TNT, disable PVP and run away as the base is destroyed.
As the owner of a Terraria server, I can't stand the PVP toggle for basically this reason.

OK, so apparently my argument is invalid, doesn't matter because I found a good non-pvp server.
