Have you ever been in that situation, where your racing against a horde of zombies to your base so you can shred them from your home with the rapid fire clock you put on that dispensor, but then a spider jumps of the roof of your house and your forced to go around the back, but when you realize there is no back your forced to pull out your poison, skeleton bone, wolf-fang-encrusted sword, and slay these hordes once and for all? Me neither. I really think minecraft needs something to spruce up the thrill and adventure of fighting, since it's the main aspect of the game asides building, and exploring, both of which you end up in fighting anyway.
Now sure, it would be horrible if minecraft was a combat focused game, and i'm not saying it should be. But i am saying that what combat exists can be improved. So please don't just say 'oh it's stupid, minecraft isn't about the fighting, it's about building' because if it wasn't meant to about fighting, why is there fighting? There are two bosses in fact. Once again, not saying it is the main aspect, but it shouldn't be neglected.
BEING HIT
One of my ideas for the fighting itself, is that different attacks give different effects. At the moment, unless you have a knockback enchantment, any kind of hit is just a lose of hearts and a subtle but purely annoying knockback. When I say purely annoying, i'm not saying it should be removed, but it's not fun or thrilling. If it really meant more, meant something was going really wrong, then maybe it would be that kind of thing where you think, 'OH NO, I got knocked back! no no no no no! this isn't happening, I gotta win this...'. But for now it's just, 'oh I got knocked back'. Getting back on track, cuts, bruises, hits, smacks, bites, etc should have their own knockback and effects, like adrenaline 1/8 times, small pause and gasp where the player can't move, slowness and heavy breathing, etc., and maybe some different, but subtle, screen effects to let players know how they've been hit, like gashes and cuts, poison or bruises on the screen Sure these could get annoying, but it's better than, 'well every kind of hit has it's own kind of damage, and they all knockback X blocks far'. I think with some tweaking and tuning, these ideas could be subtle enough to add a little more depth in the combat, but it has to be very subtle. Not that this is the best idea, but I would like to hear yours.
SITUATIONS
In terms of getting into those kinds of positions mentioned earlier, no, I do not think that minecraft should just spawn a pack of zombies in one direction and a spider in the other, no kinds of setups like that. They will never get to work properly, and players will know exactly what setup it is, and know which direction they could just run away. I do like the idea of spawning packs but. I have never been attacked by a pack of zombies unless finding a dungeon, I just get attacked by two skellies and a spider and maybe a zombie, never packs like that. While this might make the game horrible and should be tweaked and tuned first, I think monsters should have a larger sight range. When you walk outside at first, you really do get the choice to attack that creeper party of there, or that lonesome zombie that will never stand a chance. I think there should never be that kind of chance. YES, this could easily make things way too hard and never et you stand a chance, but I think it should just be enough to eliminate any kind of choice in who you fight next. It may also create that spider dropping in front of your door effect, sure hardly and rarely, but a lot more possible. Something has to be done to fix this choice, and i am not saying this is the best option, but it could be a descent option, and I would like to hear yours.
WEAPONS
As far as weapons go, it's just wooden, stone, iron, gold, and diamond sword for combat. enchanting, yeah sure, but with the new books it just means that there is a new top notch weapon (no pun intended). Bow and arrow for long range, potions for medium. Not much else to it. I think a solution is that there should be more (NOT better) options for weapons. Encrusting weapons with a cave spider's poison gland, or a wolves fangs and claws, but you need to keep in mind that to make these things not so overpowered, you need to add a down side to them. It's about giving things a good purpose. Poison glands - puts you at risk of being poisoned, puts anyone (allies) around at risk of being splashed by poison, maybe the poison can wear off after X hits, lowers knock back. wolf fangs - makes you walk slower, hit slower, could get weapon stuck in enemy's flesh until they knockback a certain distance. Maybe different weapons, I know there are already threads about this, but I would like to mention it here, It would be a great asset to the game as long as there is no 'best' weapon. That's all. I would like to hear some of your idea on weapons, but they should most likely be post on the pinned thread on general suggestions.
I would like to say that I have only made this topic to suggest that it needs to be done over, improved, revamped, to make it a good challenge in the game, not an aspect of the game. I understand some of this may not be capable since some people already experience great lag, but it is something that we and the developers should think about. Sorry if this has already been done, but a search has shown me nothing of this extent.
Please reply, I would like to hear some ideas, and share this with the world, turtleagldragon.
For a second there, I thought you were going to suggest turn-based combat.
Thank you for this post. I'd love to see fangs/claws used as a raw source of defense, along with more variations of swords. Poison from cave spiders, maybe blade powder/blaze rods could be used. I really like this idea - it would really give minecraft a more dangerous feel. This post has inspired me to add something of the type to a mod - like fangs or claws as weapons. Maybe poisoned swords, too, if you'll allow me to use it.
While this slightly touches on the gear-check aspect of Minecraft combat, it still doesn't help in the slightest the fact that you can still just win by spam-clicking with a sword, nor the fact that bows still simply lose to swords in most cases. Half support.
