Cool idea I mean props for trying, But it is lame because the nether is not meant to support life. Only half life like zombie-pigmen xD But I really do not think this belongs in the game. No support, Good try though.
Then why not it be dead trees? or tree's with only half of their leaves so it's this "half life" things you're talking about..
I don’t’ believe the Nether is supposed to be dead. There are definitely living things within the nether. However, I’d rather see a new nether craziness kind of thing have this resource. It should have a distinct nether difference, not a recolored Overworld item. Really push that creative thinking here. I’d support if it was hard to find (say grows on the bottom of lava lakes), had a much more valuable purpose, and couldn’t be easily farmed.
I came up with idea of the new shapes! It's designed to make the trees more bizarre.
These trees usually connect from floor to ceiling and can have many branches, leaves may grow even if branch is pointing downward.
Netherwood trees may be found growing sideways, this one has branches!
This tree grows in similar matter to how fungus grows on trees.
This one is my favorite, full support from me, this would look great and it would be hard to get if it's over lava, making it more difficult.. also with this image, the leaves should stay as dense as they are (which is not much) so yeah.. FULL SUPPORT

I support, but expand the idea a lot.
Dante's Divine Comedy actually does mention trees in Hell, or should I say, The Inferno? They're gnarled and thorny, though, which makes sense given where they're located.
The way I see it, a Nether tree would look similar. You'd still have the trunk harvestable for wood, but instead of typical leaf blocks everywhere I'd look for something more sparse. Fencepost-esque branches with thorns would be nice, with only one leaf block at the tip of each branch. The logs and branches could also have thorns like cactus, to reinforce the hellish image and provide a means of injecting poison.

HOLY CRAP! I had no idea you already came up with a branch system while I was typing my reply! Awesome job on the models, the branches and growth patterns look freaky as hell - and yes, that pun was utterly intentional! *Ba dum tsh!*
Nether should be dead-like,..
on that topic doesn't nether warts grow in the nether?
in that case, why can't these nether trees?
or perhaps, just say these trees are dead.(maybe remove the leaves)
hmmm, it being based off christian hell isn't good obviously, but what other kinds of hell even exist?, all religons have this sorta thing, as far as i know anyway, although i know my religons hell has a sea of solid stone in the shape of waves, and people get kicked off of cliffs onto this sea, plenty of other hells though.
plants are okay as long as they aren't fireproof, poisonous, retextured oak trees.
I think the Norse hell is basically just a dark and gloomy and sad place.

The edited trees look a lot better, but I still can't get past the leaves. They aren't the right shade of red that fits in with the nether. Make them a bit darker, I think. Close to the color of the fog in the nether.
I do like the fact that the trees are twisted, and grow sideways/warped. That's a bit better. You still have my support, I suppose.
Guys, The nether isn't meant to be dead or alive, It's in between, just look at the pigmen! This is why I feel the tree should less lively, yes I think it is too lively at the moment. Also, the leaves look like nether warts and the Trunks look like nether brick. They shouldn't be like this, They should be sickly hands reaching from the ground, dark red since they have been scorched by the heat, and no leaves. The tree spawns/grows as a certain type of wood, when mined turns a similar, darker wood and has a chance to drop sapplings as well, to stop people from mining the same block to get sappling.
Also, there must be an extra use for it apart from fire proof, and different colour. No wish list, I know, but we should start thinking about it.
I don't see much use to this ATM; people will still want to use oak wood, birch wood, spruce wood, etc. purely for their textures, even if it's flammable.
(It even gives harmful effects when near it and has an awful texture, discouraging using it as a building material)
Maybe it could drop charcoal unless used with Silk Touch or something, it needs more features than being just fireproof.

Support - the Nether could definitely use something cool like this to make it a better dimension. I think there should be another advantage like it gives you 8 planks instead of 4 per log.

I...support. As much as I argue, I can see you changed it a lot and have fought for it. You have earned my support.
