I'm thinking about how the Nether can have trees. It's awfully empty without trees.
Netherwood is slightly harder to break than normal wood. However, it has an advantage. It's fireproof.
The characteristics of netherwood would be dark purple. The leaves are similar to oak but blood-red. The saplings are similar to oak but purple and red.
These are the components. From left to right: Netherwood Log, Netherwood Planks, Netherwood Leaves and Netherwood Saplings. (Stairs and slabs are not included in the picture)
Occasionally, you will see white eyes appearing on leaves, looks like Herobrine. It's purely aesthetical. It's meant to be a bit scary. (Herobrine eyes may be scrapped from idea.)
Netherwood trees comes in four different forms: Branched pillar, sideways branched, mushroom shape and the standard oak shape.
These trees usually connect from floor to ceiling and can have many branches, leaves may grow even if branch is pointing downward.
Netherwood trees may be found growing sideways, this one has branches!
This tree grows in similar matter to how fungus grows on trees.
The leaves, for strange reason, would rarely drop apples. However, like other leaves, it drops saplings occasionally. This makes Netherwood renewable.
Netherwood saplings can be placed on three type of blocks: Soul Sand, Dirt and Grass. It's the only sapling to be able to be placed on soul sand. Netherwood saplings do not require light to grow. I don't want any stupid restrictions of "can't grow in bright light, or can only be placed on soul sand."
Netherwood log and planks, including stairs and slabs, are completely fireproof, lava won't even burn them. Ironically, it can be used as fuel.
Logs, however, is toxic if you touch the sides of log. You can even get poisoned for 5 seconds!
The purpose of the trees are to make the Nether a bit more interesting and also a source of fireproof wood. The wood also has higher blast resistance than all the other woods. This will also make it possible to survive in the Nether indefinitely, from the beginning.
Apart from the quartz ores and the rare Nether fortress, the Nether looks awfully empty.
It's great for aesthetics.

Pros of Using Netherwood
•Can be used for all recipes involving wooden planks.
•Can be used to build ominous-looking houses.
•Fireproof wood that won't get burned by lava and fire.
•New colour for wood.
•Another source of Apples.
Cons of Using Netherwood
•Log is toxic if you touch the sides. You can get inflicted with Wither or Poison effect.
•Takes twice as long to grow and requires twice as much bonemeal to instantly grow.
•Requires you to enter the Nether first to harvest these.
•Netherwood trees are fairly rare. It's not hard to find but there are few trees spread far apart, forcing you to start a farm.
•Sometimes they may be over lava, harvest with caution.
If it's dead then explain the Blaze, Ghasts and Zombie Pigmen. And the magma cubes. How do you explain the Nether Fortress? Ancient, Extinct Nether Civilization.
Blazes are not undead. Magma cubes are not undead. Therefore the Nether is not dead.
I don't think the Nether is dead, it's simply a dimension with different life forms.
Do you want the unique appearance of the Netherwood trees?

The nether isn't supposed to have no life, it is supposed to be hell. It isn't supposed to have any living plant growth, it would ruin the theme. And, the zombie pigmen aren't a good example for "live". They are zombie pigmen.
And to answer your question, no, I don't like it.
The trees of Nether contains souls. If you look closely at logs, it appears to have soul. Turning the logs into planks, however, completely release souls and is just a fireproof wood.
I know about that, And they wont burn if you just make them away from the lava.
Theres also random fires, blazes and ghasts to look out for. The only reason I brought it up was because the OP wanted trees in the nether so... There ya go.

I'm sorry, but pidgeonholing the Nether into being a lifeless and boring wasteland is not a good thing. The way I see it, hell is supposed to be a dangerous and threatening place. Not a lifeless place. Why can't we have some variation to it? I mean, sure, the post isn't perfect. A few trees scattered around the current Nether won't really add much, but if these were added into a new "Hell Jungle" biome it would be perfect. Having a dark, scary biome covered by a deep purple and blood-red canopy along with razor sharp/poison/burning foliage would be quite hellish and add variety to the currently boring Nether. Like this:

Not a perfect example of what it should look like by any means, but the general feel is there.

So are you saying that hell is supposed to be alive?! I really just think that it would fit the theme. I don't know what to do!
I decided that to make the trees appear hellish, logs are toxic to the touch. The style is meant to appear hellish, fitting the theme of Nether. You will be lucky if you can find a forest with lot of Netherwood trees.
The balancing part!
Also, the trees will be slightly rare. It's not that hard to find, it's just that there are few trees placed far apart and they are only found on patches of soul sand. So if you don't find them, you won't be finding trees, they can't grow on Netherrack. If you find a large patch of soul sand that spans 16 chunks in 4x4, expect to find about 8 trees scattered across the patch of soul sand.
Also, it will take saplings twice as long to grow and if you do use bone meal, it takes twice as much bone meal to grow.
The picture in post #15 is pretty nice, thanks Strottinglemon!

I'm saying that hell should be a threatening and hostile place. That can be accomplished through a number of ways, such as a desolate burning wasteland or an evil, shrouded forest filled with things that want to kill you. I'm not saying it should be full of life, but not empty either.

You and me aren't thinking about the same hell. I'm thinking about the death place. DEATH! NO LIFE! DEATH!
First seeing the thread name, I thought this would be terrible. However, providing textures and a balance system to the trees along with a really cool aesthetic to it, I give full support. While the Nether is supposed to be dead, this seems like something Mojang would do.
Well, this would provide a answer to the burning problem in servers. Want a wood house, but it keeps burning due to griefers? Just use Netherwood planks to make a wooden house that's fireproof.

It has the texture of wood plus it's fireproof.
By the way, you do know you can grow overworld trees in the nether, right? Sure they catch on fire ten seconds later, but its possible.
Theres also random fires, blazes and ghasts to look out for. The only reason I brought it up was because the OP wanted trees in the nether so... There ya go.

Yes, adding scattered trees will surely bring the entire dimension crashing down around us.
