With the addition of resource packs, and texture packs like SMP 16x Revival 2263, made me think. Wouldn't it be cool if there were untextured, uncraftable, unnamed blocks in minecraft that all were under one block I.D. using the exponent system like wool, and they were texturable and nameable with the new resource packs?
Map makers could create their own textures and names for a resource pack, and Minecraft would use them for the blank blocks. Expanding on this, there could be items, armour, doors, slabs, stairs, and even a human mob, if wanted, that could all be textured through resource packs. You could even add liquids.
The items could be set as a weapon, an axe, a bow (which would require animation textures), an arrow (if players wanted to make varying bows with varying ammos), something with no left or right clock ability (such as dyes), or a fire starter. The armours could be selected to act as existing types of armour for how much damage they repel.
Blocks, Slabs, and Steps would be utilized in specialized builds for the atmosphere the map maker is trying to make. This would also allow them to not have to retexture any vanilla blocks to add their own, and have slab and stair counterparts for each. Textures for blocks would be individual for each side, and to have all sides textured the same would be a selectable option. Blocks could be selected to be a storage unit, with a GUI like a dispenser (3x3 storage), and the name in the upper left would be the name provided by the resource pack. If desired, the block could also be set to mimic a dropper or dispenser, the items being dropped or dispensed from contact with a redstone signal.
More doors because sometimes you need more than just a wooden or iron door. Or maybe you need another kind of wooden door, but it wouldn't fit somewhere else. You'd select if this door would act like a wooden door (right clickable), or an iron door (NOT right clickable).
Liquids, you'd select if the liquid acted like water (caused no damage when player is in, but can drown), or lava (causes player damage by being in it). Expanding on the acting like lava, you would also select if it set the player on fire or not.
Were there to be these, the blocks would all fall under one I.D. with exponents separating them, the I.D. after for the slabs, also separated by exponents, and so on with stairs, doors, items, helms, chest plates, leggings, boots, liquids, and the human spawn egg. There would be 10-16 of each, or more, if possible. This would, however, take up 11 I.Ds. It would be good to keep that in mind.
I, myself, would love to see such an idea implimented. This would be unprecidented and HUGE for the map making community. Just imagine the things that could be added with this, the ideas, and the adventures.
Example of a config file (I know it's notepad) for the blocks:
I'm glad to see even a few people like this. Those who find this, please, share it. If you like the idea, and want to see it in the next update, 1.7 Release, then share it on Facebook, Twitter, and whatever else you think will get it noticed by people. I have a feeling Dinnerbone would love this, but I have no idea how to contact him.

It'll be out in like... a week. And I can imagine it would take a little bit for the configuration abilities of the resource packs to be worked out. Don't get me wrong. I'd love to see it on 1.6. but it doesn't seem possible.

Comic Sans is the best

Why not 1.6? It's not done yet.

No need for modding! Just a few new textures in packs!
