I want to start off by saying that Im new to the forum, and I sincerely hope this goes well. Thanks to all who read and empathize.(Or criticize, as long as its constructive)
I have found that although Minecraft is populated it can be a bit lonely at times. I understand that the concept is about what the individual can achieve, but people like to share their achievements and mutually coexist. When we(Minecraft players) go off on an adventure we have to go alone or with an animal. I think it would be essential to game play if we could travel with a thegn or commrad. We do have villagers to keep us company, but they aren't HUMAN. I think adding a HUMAN to Minecraft that will follow you and fight for you would be awesome for everyone. It should work a lot like the donkey and wolf. Meaning that our follower has a limited inventory at our disposal, but also fights for us if we are attacked. With this being said the follower could be made to stay. The radius for the follower to attack should be limited. What I mean by this is that in a 10 block radius the follower would attack, but at an 11 block radius the follower would ignore or not sense a threat. What I mean by radius is the radius in which you are attacked in relation to the follower. We should have the option to outfit our follower with the same gear that is available to us. Each follower should be loyal to the rest of your followers if you have multiple. The radius situation would apply but maybe be smaller. 3-5 blocks for the followers sounds good to me. This would mean that if you had 2 followers and one was 9 blocks away from you and the other was 12 blocks away, the first would attack if you attacked, but because the second followers isn't in range of you he would still attack because he is in that 3-5 block radius of the follower who is attacking in the good faith of protecting you.
The possibilties are endless. Two people could now play against each other with small bands of troops. Your amazingly epic castle can now have guards. Your adventures wouldn't be as lonely. If you don't like to play in a medieval setting then you could be a VIP with bodyguards. Like I said the possibilities are endless.
New blocks are very cool, but I think Minecraft needs more A.I. focus and maybe more items to play with to give the game volume. I know that Minecraft is an indy game, but it has become a blockbuster(no pun intended). I would like to see it to continue to improve instead of improvising. I won't get in to politics so to speak, but thanks for reading and thank you for your empathy, concern, and open mindedness.
Yeah, it would be cool if randomly generated structures had other "players" in them that you could "tame" by giving them a certain item, and they you could give them items in their inventory, order them to guard or follow, and equip them with weapons and armor. I'm actually working on an idea that would incorporate a feature similar to this.
I'm not too big of a fan of the idea. Something I like most about the game is that you are the only human, completely alone in the world. I wouldn't mind as much if it was a non-human creature but I still don't like the idea.

Before I tell you what I think of your idea, allow me to give you some advice. First off, always search to see if your idea has been suggested before. In your case, ithas (Ineedmorewordstoprovideforallthelinks). Second, more detail about your idea is always welcomed. How do you become friends with this new mob? How much damage can they deal? How fast do they move? Do they avoid lava and long falls? Can they open doors or activate redstone? Do they attack all hostile mobs, or only some? Can they travel to the Nether, or the End? What do they look like? How big is their inventory? What weapons can they use? How would this change combat, would hostile mobs have to be buffed for this to work?
On to the idea itself, I can't say I'm wild about it. I've always found companions in video games to be frustrating, not helpful. And they certainly don't lift the fog of loneliness, only other players can do that. Also, while one companion at a time might be all right, multiple following you around would, for me, make the game less interesting.

That would work. I originally thought of it as a merc. Meaning you could buy their service with emeralds or something. I wouldn't care how it would pan out if it became a possiblity at all. Thanks for your input, much appreciated.

I honestly see your point. I would probably only travel with one for that reason, but you have to appeal to those who like to over do it as well. In this case it would be your choice to get more or not. The follower would be equiped by you with the same things that you use. The damage would depend on the weapon. It probably would be safe to leave the values at default so its not too OP. They would be like a wolf. So they would avoid lava, water , and falls like a wolf would. Just an idea, not a sales pitch. With more community interest I might take more time and think the thought out "block by block " or even code a mod for an actual representation. Lets see how far the idea gets first. Thanks for your input. It was much appreciated.

I could deal with a humanoid figure. It would be a step up from squidward villagers. As long as the follower seemed intellectual I would be fine with what ever. If you put armor on him depending what texture pack you use then you wouldn't be able to tell what he was. lol Thanks for your input.

I thought more on what you said and thought that I would add: The idea would still be cool if you were the only human. You could theoretically rise up in the culture and be a king of other races. (Just a scenerio) But as like I said, the humaniod figure with arms UNCROSSED-lol is a big thing for me personally. You could also avoid them or raid them(however they appeared in game) like you can do with a wolf. A lot of times I don't even play with a wolf, but then there are those lonely days where I go get him and let him tag along. Not trying to convert you, just trying to promote open mindedness. Thanks again.
I like the idea but that gets rid of the ultimate MINECRAFT feel.. being lonely is what I like!
It would be avoidable as a wolf is. Unless you mean you don't even want humans on the planet. lol Better see a doctor. Just joking. Thanks for your input. This would not be an optional feature. It would be an update, but I say avoidable like a wolf because everyone likes to play in their own way. Minecraft is set up now to be played in your own way and I think that it should stay that way. I also believe on the flip side though that updates should still be made to enhance game play, but should be done so to where the player can seek out the new features at their own leisure. Hope this clarifies things a little. Thanks again guys (and girls.)

When updating Minecraft everyone has to feel like they've gained something or at least not lost anything. The point is not to lose players but to gain more and keep the oringials happy. With this being said, with my idea and others like it, you would still be able to be lonely if you wanted. But on those days where you need some company, you could go seek this feature out. The feature has to be sought out. It wont search for you. or at least not the way I envisioned it.

Retired StaffBefore I tell you what I think of your idea, allow me to give you some advice. First off, always search to see if your idea has been suggested before. Lol. Well anything is a possibility.
