I was surprised Mojang did not add this in 1.5 but how cool would it be if you could change the light level emitted from a redstone lamp with a comparator input? This would allow you compactly show the progress of something or how much health someone had! Or even different light levels in farms to automatically harvest crops or in mushroom farms so growth continues! Thoughts please

Why did you post a duplicate thread of your one from yesterday?
Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.
Exactly how would comparators be used to change the light level? This idea needs more explanation.
Read the original copy of this thread, it makes a lot more sense if you look at the fact we can already use jukebox signals that output different signal strengths, though we're limited in the functionality they provide due to only being able to use them with discs. If we had for example 12 other blocks or even 1 other block that had 12 clicks on it like a repeater and each click outputs a different signal strength, we could use a comparator behind it to output different signals for different reasons, like for example with a daylight sensor as another user mentioned.

The comparator would provide a direct input to the lamp, either straight into it or through a block, and it would cause the emitted light from the lamp to match that of the redstone strength going in. Since the max light level is 15 and so is the max redstone level, there would be no need for estimates. Diagram below.
[!]=redstone torch
1-15= redstone power level
[r]= redstone lamp
1)-15)= light level
[>]= comparator
Sorry bout the bad diagram, I am using my phone
But I hope you understand it. There could also be a block between the comparator and the redstone lamp and it would still work.
Think about the texture. Do we really need 14 more textures just for lamps?
No we don't, does redstone dust have 16 different textures for all the different levels,does wool have different textures for all the different colours, and do the all blocks have different textures for the each light level they could be subjected too? No, so the redstone lamps won't.
Well... that is because Redstone Dust is textured on the fly, by multiplying colours from the greyscale texture.
Lamps on the other hand, already have two textures; one for on and one for off. Removing these would cause texture packs quite some grief.
Well I'm sure changing this with the new resource pack won't be too difficult and beside, just because it already has two textures doesn't mean it couldn't be reduced to a grey scale version and coloured "on the fly" like you said. And besides, wouldn't any new block or texture refit cause grief on texture packs? It could be introduced with the new update. Or even if it did need 16 separate textures, the new texture pack system introduced in 1.5 could handle that.
