I in a mine and it was completly dark, so i placed a torch. when it lit up i saw i placed the torch on a coal ore block and thought i thought it was a good thing it wasnt real life because i would be blown up.thats when i thought maybe they should add that if fire or a torch touched coal ore it would do somthing. It would depend on the vein size, for an example if it was only 1 ore it would just cach on fire but if it was a huge vein it would make a small explosion that made a big fire ball that caches you on fire. I think this would add a more realistic feel to mining and i think it would be fun and exiting.Hope you like the idea and thank you for the feedback. -Carldabomb
Minecraft isn't about realism, this seems to make mining a little too dangerous, and people would get mad at coal, and not use torches.
No, or very little support.
If we we're to do this, I think it would just complicate the game. Coal explosions are usually the fault of methane that the coal releases and the powder that the methane explosion dislocates. This means you would have to add a lot of elements, including dust and gas; even just in theory. Plus, coal can, in some cases, spontaneously oxidize and com-bust due to the new air from the shaft; which you would have to code in. A lot of factors are in play here, like rate at which coal released methane, percentage of which blocks of coal release methane before they are mined and only when they are being mined, amount of coal that can be pulverized by a gust of wind from a methane explosion (The methane doesn't really harm, it's the dust that burns that does some real damage).
Plus, you could stop here. Since we already have established gas and dust, it wouldn't make sense for us to stop. The deeper you get in a newly opened cave, the less oxygen their would be. Meaning you would have to place ventilation shafts every so often. Open firelight would be a hazard coal is very common and a explosion can happen at a distance; you would have to make use of other types of light (e.g. glowstone and lamps, which are not all that easy to make on a large scale). You would also come up with either something like limestone (used to coat coal to prevent it from com-busting, since it isn't flamable) or dampening (since you would have to use a wet pick because iron and such might create sparks) using water.
I could go on; but I think you understand what I am getting at.
-Maybe- for a mod; but I'd rather not have this implemented into vanilla Minecraft.

it dosent have to be THAT realistic i just mean fire+coal=boom

The topic is entitled *Realistic* Mining Explosions. If it was just fire+coal=boom, it wouldn't just be simplistic, it would be fiction.
Either way, you aren't going to find a supporter in me. Adding "simplistic" coal mines is braking the boundaries of the simplistic Minecraft feel but not quite making it to realism.

i mean realistic in that now when you light coal on fire nothing happenes and that is unrealistic this would make it more realistic in that sense i dont have to calculate air pressure and oxygen levels to find out if you will suffocate and have to add air vents
