I was surprised Mojang did not add this in the 1.5 update. If a redstone lamp has a comparator input, the lamp emits a light strength matching that of the comparator input. And since the max redstone strength = 15 and so does the light, it would be linear! This could be used as more compact way of showing how full something is or the progress of something. Also, it could be used in light sensitive areas such as mob grinders to control what spawns or if mushrooms should be growing.

Funny I was thinking the same sort of thing just last night for using jukebox signal strengths in the same manner, they're very handy as they are for making locked mechanisms that only activate when a specific disc is played, as each of the 12 discs output a different signal, I just wish the concept could be applied to other things so as not to be limited to just a disc but rather a trip wire hook (looks like a key).. ...
In the image below, the redstone lamps in the ground represent the signal strength for each of the 12 discs in the order in which they are listed in the Creative menu...

A good idea indeed. I was wondering about this one myself. I like the idea of it only working with comparators so that it can still be wired normally without being weak due to the signal.

At first glance it didn't sound right, that is just looking at the title... But reading on; using a comparator to influence the lighting of the lantern, now that sounds like a good idea. could be useful for a lot of things. like an actual subway that has lights that flicker at various lighting levels every so often. That of course would be a task in a half to get it working...lol

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
