A very simple idea: when someone types a message into the server console, the message will appear as a speech bubble beside their head. Adds a touch more realism, plus makes it easier to see who said what. Open to suggestions
I actually dislike the idea. Adding a 3D moving GUI would be extremly hard to implement without it looking like a 2-year-old drew the speech bubble, and it would cause extreme lag on all servers that have more than 5 people that play on it. Not to mention that it would block just about all sight anywhere with a large amount of people. I do see where you're coming from, but no support, sorry

One: You're wrong. And not just about that not being what a GUI is (a GUI is any kind of form or menu that the user uses to communicate with software, this is more like a context sensitive display). This would be extremely easy to implement. All it would be is a sprite that appears above a player's head, triggered by them speaking that displays the text. That would take a few minutes to implement.
Two: You're wrong again. We are talking about an extra sprite per person max, and only when they are talking. The amount it would take to render the sprite would be miniscule, hardly any more than it takes to render the chat window.
Three: You're partially correct. Yes this could potentially block the view of people. The maximum characters you can type is 59. That means it would be about 2 lines of 30 characters. To my knowledge the largest character in Minecraft's supported font is 5x7 pixels. Add a pixel on all sides for spaces and you have a 210x18 pixel (maybe a little more for a fancy border) chat box at maximum at normal viewing distance. In order for it to block out your view it would need to be a LOT of people right in your face, in which case their bodies would be blocking your view anyways, as would the chat window because they all have to talk for the message bubble to appear. So yest it would be possible, but in 99% of situations your view would be obstructed by the other players and the chat window anyways.

The way I see it is as a tag-like thing above a player's head that has text in it, a similar style to the current chat window and name-tag.

I hate people who complain. I hate spiders. I hate people who own an Xbox One. I hate people who like sandbox games. I hate people who like first person shooters. I hate people who like explosions. I hate people who like video games. I hate people who are hateful. I hate people that don't like spam. I hate people who like cake. I hate people who type in proper grammar and spell words properly on the internet. I hate hypocrites.

Do not like it at all. Too unrealistic and anoying,
What planet are you from, because here on Earth when people talk I don't usually see a white bubble pop-up beside their head with whatever they just said written down in it.
Honestly, without actual voice-chat the current chat system is as realistic as you can get (and why so many games use it)

ragnarock200: awesome, are those things with the creeper faces pistons or furnaces
Snowey1994: There dispensers
I like that idea but when another player is trying to attack you and you try to hide you give away your position by talking to get a friend to save you,But that is realistic.
As much as I like the concept, it should in no way be something forced on people. Either something in the server properties or just an option on the client side to choose between local (bubbles), global (current), or just disable chat altogether.

For those who think it would block view, just like the chat bar in the bottom left hand corner, it would be transparent. Even customisable in the options. And the options would probably effect how they see other chat bubbles and not how theirs look, allowing for people to not use the feature if implemented.I also think that it should have the same effect as your name tag, so that when you stand behind a Wall and crouch, they can't see the text.

And maybe a fourth one. Global Bubbles where you have the full text chat as well as bubbles.
Just add an option for "Chat Bubbles" in the chat settings page in options. Nobody is forced to use it, those who want it can have it, those who dont can just disable it. Maybe you could change the opacity in the options.
You are the player.
Wake up.
