I toatally support this! Skeletons have always been annoing to me, but after 1.5, I just hated them. And now the bones they drop are even more useless...
Minecraft is easy for people with diamond armor and stuff (like me), but when you first start a world its lots harder. Its almost impossibe to kill a skeleton without a bow when in water.

Well of course the game gets easier as you get better gear. In a game without enemy difficulty scaling that is inevitable. But even on your first night Skeletons aren't that hard to kill provided you made a Stone Sword. But that is the point, they are supposed to be a threat for the beginning of the game, isn't that what a lot of threads on here are about? How night isn't "scary" anymore?
The other part about them being hard to kill when you are swimming toward them, I agree, but that also makes perfect sense. You cannot swim as fast as you can run, so it makes you an easy target. I will say that their knockback could be reduced a bit if you are in water though. Or they could just implement a better swimming system and make you feel like a person swimming, rather than a sentient piece of driftwood.

Agree with the others here, don't find them too hard. Nor do I really find them all that deadly accurate, you can dodge their arrows with ease. Summary of my thoughts:
They encourage you to make bows and arrows (see my sig). They will hurt you if you attack with a melee weapon, but as * said, that's kinda the whole idea of ranged units.
They have a quite small detection range, so most often you see or hear them before they see you.
I think groups of mobs, especially different mobs, are meant to be a great challenge, and I like that they are (again, see my sig ).
If you don't go outside at night, and make sure to place torches when underground, you can largelly avoid having to fight them in the first place.
If they overwhelm you, you can run away relatively easily, and simple "evasive maneuvers" like zig-zagging is often enough to throw off their aim. There's also most often good cover to be found.
As others have said, there's just as strong an opinion in the community that Minecraft is too easy, and having a mob that's deadly at a distance (as opposed to every other overworld mob except perhaps the Enderman) alleviates this somewhat.

Works as Intended, I suppose, though I happen to disagree with you on the difficulty without . I feel I can kill them easily with just an iron sword and no armour, but then again, I always play without armour so I suppose I have more experience fighting that way.
I actually made a mod that was reviewed by Setosorcerer and is available for server, modloader, lan, and forge. It is the easier skeletons mod that makes skeletons as powerful as they were before 1.5(Much less powerful) You can get it here. You can watch Seto's review . Hope you like it.
I love how everyone is ing about Skeletons being too easy not so long ago, then Mojang changes it. And now people think they are too hard and should go back to how they were. Anyway, I always bring a bow with me if there is just the slightest chance I would meet an enemy. Honestly no problem for me to take them out on Hard difficulity, even though I only wear diamond shoes with Feather Falling 4 on.
Have you ever tried getting skeletons to fight? Its easy. And from what your saying, I can guess that you do not leave your house much. And you know you can change the spawnrates on mobs in your minecraft directory, right?
IMHO: Skeletons rate of fire is fine, what isn't fine is their 100% accuracy. If the accuracy decreased to at least 50% at their furthest, then things would be fine. There's no way to avoid getting hit by arrows if you encounter a hunting party of the bone heads in an open field. Simultaneously, they're typically little more than a nuisance in dungeons and caverns because all you need to do is hide around a corner. Maybe increase their range.
Introduction In my opinion, skeletons are quite hard to kill. It may seem easy to kill a single skeleton, but a group of skeletons? They are sometimes quite hard and difficult to take down when you only have the basic Minecraft tools. Why not make skeletons easier to kill? Their bow accuracy is very high, and therefore, inflicting a lot of damage when you try to kill them. So it would be easier if they had made a few changes to the skeleton.
It's not suppose to be easy to kill a group of skeletons imo >.>....
My suggestions - Make skeletons easier to kill, or to make them inflict less damage - Shoot their arrows less frequently at the player - See players in a smaller block radius (Skeletons currently see players in a 16 block radius) - Fires at players in a smaller block radius (Skeletons currently stop and shoot when the player is 10 blocks away)
1. Make them easier to kill? they are really easy to kill if they weren't shooting you. I think the damage they inflict is okay right now.
2. The problem isn't how frequently they shoot, it's more that the skeletons have very very very very good accuracy...
Responses in bolded underline. imo the only thing that needs nerfing is the accuracy. Everything else is fine though scaling based on difficulty would be nice if they haven't already.
The only thing I support is nerfing the near 100% accuracy of their shots. Besides that, I think everything else is fine.
I'd instead lower the frequency of their shots, skeleton shots can be dodged (or at least I can dodge them) by sprinting in circles or just zigzagging to them.
I suppose it'd be nice to have them a little easier to kill, however I don't usually find groups of them until I'm fairly armed and ready to fight them.
No support, they really aren't hard to fight and the begining of the game needs to be hard so you get some sense of a good job done when you get the good gear.
I agree, being shot by a skeleton is one of the most annoying things happening to me in Minecraft. What's annoying is that you're knocked back by every arrow they hit you with and because they shoot them so fast you sometimes cant even get close enough to hit them with a sword before you die (depending on your health prior and what armor you have). To try and counteract that you'd think blocking would do you some good but not really; not only does it slow your walking speed but it doesn't even stop the knockback. So by that measue I think blocking needs to be tweaked to be more usefull.
If blocking is dampening the damage dealt I think it should in turn stop any knockback. It'd make a world of difference. You would finally be able to block arrows coming at you then go in for an attack more smoothely without all that painful knockback holding you back.
Despite having a change like this it'd still be nice to have the frequency and the accuracy of the arrows shot lowered. Badprenup's idea actually looks pretty promising.
...
Currently, their damage is based on difficulty, their attack speed is based on range, and their accuracy is constant. I suggest it be changed so that their accuracy is based on difficulty (also partially based on range, no matter what their coded accuracy is how far away you are effects your time to dodge), their attack speed is based on range, and their damage is based on attack speed.
Lets throw up some theoretical numbers:
Maximum Range (Detection): 16 Blocks
Maximum Range (Attacking): 10 Blocks
Base Accuracy: 60% (Easy), 70% (Normal), 80% (Hard)
Attack Speed (Maximum Attack Range): 1 Shot every 3 Seconds (.33 Shots per Second)
Attack Speed (<3 Blocks Away): 1 Shot every 1 Second (1 Shots per Second)
Damage (Maximum Attack Range): 5 HP (2.5 Hearts)
Damage (<3 Blocks Away): 2 HP (1 Heart)
With these numbers, the Skeleton still retains the buff it received in the recent update. It will fire faster if you get closer. However, the damage is no longer constant, it decreases as you get closer by approximately 1 HP every 3 Blocks. This is because it increases the fire rate as you get closer, so it doesn't have as much time to draw the bowstring. Here is a rough chart:
Blocks Away: Damage/Attack Speed/DPS
11+: 0/0/0 (It is too far away to attack)
10: 5/3/1.66
9: 4/2.75/1.45
8: 4/2.5/1.6
7: 4/2.25/1.77
6: 3/2/1.5
5: 3/1.75/1.77
4: 3/1.5/2
3: 3/1.25/2.4
2: 2/1/2
1: 2/1/2
0: 2/1/2
So as you can see from that chart, the minimum and maximum DPS are 1.45 and 2.4, respectively. The average DPS is 1.75, rounding up to 2. That means that on average, it would take 10 seconds to kill an unarmored player at full health who is just standing there. That also assumes that each shot would be a hit, so it would actually take longer to kill you on lower difficulties. That time, factoring in accuracy values I stated earlier, equates to:
That is a fairly long time for an AFK player, so what if we reduce their maximum attack speed to 1.5? I won't show the whole chart again but it would increase their average DPS to 2.5 (rounding up), and the time to kill an unarmored AFK player would be 8 seconds on 100% accuracy, so the longest time would be 11.2 Seconds (Easy Difficulty). That still seems like it would be too slow to me. But I just wasted my lunch break typing this so I'll find out what you guys think later.
