Parrying isn't very useful in general combat. The reason why is because even though it blocks 50% of damage, it slows you down and knocks you back. You only lose half health, but you lose ground, and that's not worth it.
So my suggestion is that when anyone attacks you in melee, be it a mob or player, and you're parrying, they get knocked back as if hit by knockback I. This would make parrying useful because then they're the ones losing ground if they attack while you're defending, and would bring a new element to sword combat.
Also, if a person with an axe hits someone who's parrying, the axe wielder won't be knocked back. This happens because axes are heavier and will "break" the person's parry. Doing this will make axes be strategic for combat.
This idea is actually pretty good! Combat needs a little more to make it feel like actual combat. Only problem I see is the people who spam right click and left click when fighting, maybe there should be a special shield bash like move that you can pull off while blocking.

<Demisedulous>Dude this is Minecraft, can't we all just be autistic together
I think Knockback 1 distance is a bit too far. I just tried it on a Creeper standing still and he flew back 5 blocks. Blocking someone's attack and sending them back 5 meters is a bit too much for me, especially seeing how you can just hold right parry button.
I'd say it should be the normal knockback (2 meters), but it also causes their vision to sway 45 degrees in a random direction. So if you hit a person who is parrying and you are looking straight north (not looking up or down either, but straight ahead), you would bounce backwards 2 meters and you could be looking northeast or northwest, or you could be looking north, but upwards at a 45 degree angle or downwards 45 degrees. It makes up for the reduced knockback by adding some disorientation from a well placed block.
Also, you can't add this and make so you can just hold block, at least in my opinion. You should have you press it within 1 second before they attack, any longer and it just treats it like the normal block and reduces damage.
