Minecraft. Mine-Craft. We're missing something here. We have crafting, loads of crafting. Now, let's work on some mining! My idea is a new mob. This mob would be giant tunneling moles. This would make mining more interesting, something I feel is needed to spice up the underground of Minecraft.
Current Ideas:
These moles spawn rarely below a certain height.
They tunnel slowly, leaving a 3x3 hole in their wake. These holes reform with plain stone after the mole has reached a distance of 32 meters/blocks.
The mole would be a neutral mob.
You could tame the mole with minerals. You could then ride on the mole for a certain period of time, and it would dig for you and drop the materials it mines instead of devouring them.
Alternatively, if you attack and kill the mole, it would drop all of the minerals it had "eaten" recently, say the last 10 minerals, in addition to a stack of smooth stone or cobblestone.
The mole would have 30 health (15 hearts)
The mole would initially flee, but upon reaching halfish health, would fight back, dealing 4 damage on easy, 5 damage on normal, and 8 damage on hard. (2 hearts, 2.5 hearts, and 4 hearts respectably
Note: Minerals = ores, lapis, coal, etc
Feel free to point out crushing flaws so that I may make this better! Feel free to tell me what you like as well!
I like it but there needs to be more ways to get minerals.
I think I may have worded this badly. When I say minerals, I mean vanilla ores - iron, diamonds, gold, lapis, etc... not any new ores. I'll fix my wording now, thank you for pointing that out!
I love the idea of a tunneling mob, especially if it's tameable. But instead of riding it, I think you should instead be able to make it go in a straight path, so that it can mine tunnels for you even when you're not around.

Good idea! Maybe feeding it different "food" causes different reactions? Feeding it metals (iron, gold) would cause it to go straight, while feeding it gems (diamond, lapis) would tame it?
A mob that breaks blocks without the player needing to be aware of it, no thanks.
Ah, excellent point! I feel as if that can be resolved naturally with the mob's sound. Perhaps a shuffling/scraping could be heard when nearby? These tunnels are also only 3 by 3, so they aren't that deep anyways.

I would rather it not be able to suffocate, but travel through blocks and not break any in their path.

Hey, if you want to make sure I saw what you said, quote me on it.

It wouldn't suffocate... do you mean the player? Also, the point is that they tunnel. I do understand your point, but the rest of my idea does fail if you cannot actually have the mole tunnel... sorry!

I hate to rain on your mole parade but the mechanical issues with something that goes in a straight line for any significant distance are numerous. For one thing, what would happen when the mole moved into an unloaded chunk. Also, a 3x3 tunnel is pretty op considering that this would allow you to mine at approximately 9 times the normal rate.
If moles were to be added they should simply be a small chicken sized mob that digs a random 1x1 tunnel. It has its own small inventory (perhaps 9 slots) and the player can collect the materials that are collected in this inventory by two methods. They can kill the mole or they can feed the mole insert item here. If they feed the mole it will drop its inventory and go on its way. The moles path should not fill back in behind it and if the mole fills its inventory it stops for a certain period of time while gradually "digesting" the contents of the inventory.
Note: Using my model, the mole would take every block that it mines through into its inventory.
My bases tend to be at least partially underground, so I would most likely hate this, but, I can't help but support, I mean c'mon this is fricking awesome!!!!!!
