I have read the commonly suggested ideas, but I could not find anything like this on the list, so I think my idea is, at least, somewhat original. I'm sorry if it isn't.
My suggestion of an addition to the game is: mage/magic staffs.
Maybe you could craft the staff using an enchanted diamond (will be explained later in the post) and two sticks by placing them in the order of:
"Blaze arsenal" and "Hand-held torch" have both already been suggested, but I was thinking that maybe those two ideas could be combined together, by allowing the staff to shoot blaze fireballs, or have the ability to light up (like Gandalf's staff on Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring).
A meter could be added to the player's HUD that would indicate how much "charge" the staff had left.
Some of the magic would deplete the staff's charge upon every use (such as shooting a flame ball), while others would deplete the charge as for as long as the magic was being used (such as keeping the staff lit up).
Experience could be used at an enchanting table (or maybe, a completely new table) to both enchant the staff and to enchant diamonds which in turn, would be used (and destroyed in the process) to recharge the staff's charge.
The diamonds used to recharge the staff, could either have different levels at which they could be filled, or could be filled indefinitely as long as the player has (and is willing to pay) the experience needed to do so.
The staff's charge would directly correspond to the amount of charge the last enchanted diamond had that was used on it (or that it was crafted with).
Each individual staff can only have one enchantment.
Enchantments could be discovered by finding mage staffs (that would have no charge, of course) in chests (such as the ones commonly found by enemy spawners) and then disenchanting that staff at the enchanting table or the newly added table (as I suggested before).
The staff could have enchantments such as:
1. Ability to light up, like a hand-held torch (continues usage/depletion);
2. Ability to shoot blaze fireballs (the strength, blast radius, knock-back and the charge usage would vary upon how much the magic was charged before releasing it; depletion upon usage);
3. Ability to shoot fire (maybe, it might be laggy; continues usage/depletion);
4. Ability to shoot ice spikes (the strength, knock-back and the charge usage would vary upon how much the magic was charged before releasing it; depletion upon usage);
5. Ability to shoot ice (would slow target down when afflicted by it for an extended period of time) (again, this may be too laggy; continues usage/depletion);
6. The same two abilities with lightning;
7. The ability to turn enemies onto your side (this spell would deplete a lot of the staff's charge, if the spell was successful, and would only work on the lesser enemies; the stronger the enemy, the more magic would be depleted upon taking control of that enemy; the longer the spell is charged, the longer you would sustain loyalty from that enemy; and, of course, the greater the charge-up, the greater the magic usage; depletion upon usage);
8. Ability to stick temporary light orbs to places adjacent to the player's character (the duration and the charge usage would vary upon how much the magic was charged before releasing it; depletion upon usage)
These are only a few of the enchantments it could have.
Depending on which kind of enchantment you wanted to place on your staff, it would require different materials to craft the staff.
For example, a neutral staff (such as the neutral potions) could be constructed, and then combined with different materials depending on which type of staff you wanted (such as Glowstone to make the glowing staff).
The left mouse button could be the action button, and the right mouse button could be the disengage button. By "disengage" I mean, if you are charging up a spell, and you do not want to use it, instead of using it, and wasting valuable staff charge, you could simply tap the right mouse button you would stop charging the staff.
I think this idea is pretty good, except for the fact that it may make the player a bit overpowered.
To compensate for this, the spells could be relatively weak and/or it would requre a substantial amount of experience to make the staff and to make the diamonds which are used to recharge the staff;
Also, the neutral staff could require more rare and hard to get items (besides the diamond), such as diamond blocks, emerald/emerald blocks, wither skeleton heads, obsidian etc.

Man, that was stupid; I can't believe I didn't think of that! Thanks for the heads up; It's all good now.
Haha, it's all good! I like this suggestion more now, not too overpowered, imo.

Sorry if this is a noobish thing to do (I'm quite sure it is), but I have decided to bump my topic. I will only do this once (maybe twice, maybe).
I thought my topic was quite unique (don't we all), and I thought that I might be able to get a little more input if my suggestion stayed on the front page for more than about 2 hours.
Seems like mod material. Get a modder to do it or learn to code, it seems like a bad addition to the game.
Well, mods are cool and all, but I don't prefer mods for multiple reasons:
1. You must learn how to install them (even though it isn't that hard),
2. It can cause conflict with multiplayer servers,
3. You must wait for an update for the mod if Minecraft is updated,
4. This is the primary reason for me personally, as I have had to troubleshoot my multiplayer server a few times; If you have server issues, there a lot more variables to deal with, and analyze.
P.s. Fun fact: I came up with this idea, because I am making a scale Mines of Moria (from the Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring), and I wanted a staff that could produce light; Like Gandalf's!
Not to be rude, your ideas are genuine and unique, but "Magic" and "Minecraft" just do not blend, nor shall they ever. Enchantment is most likely the closest we'll get.

I much prefer the sharpest criticism of a single intelligent man, to the thoughtless approval of the masses.

Thanks for putting it lightly.
Asking politely, why don't you think magic will ever blend with minecraft?
Personally, I think it could blend quite nicely (not necessarily the way I suggested).
My suggestion of an addition to the game is: mage/magic staffs.
Maybe you could craft the staff using an enchanted diamond (will be explained later in the post) and two sticks by placing them in the order of:
Enchanted Diamond - Top middle square
Stick - Middle square
Stick - Bottom middle square

"WE NEED SPELLS THAT SUMMON DRAGONS"
"MAKE FAMILIARS THAT ARE CHEAP"
"THIS FIRE STAFF MAKES IT RAIN FIRE FOR NO COST"
and this is one of the better ideas I've seen, support.
