Salutations my fellow Minecraftians. A few of you may have seen my last suggestion about an easier and better way to get feathers than just massacring huge amounts of chickens for them. Similar to that one, this suggestion is also about getting a friendly mob drop than having to kill a large amount of them. Except instead of feathers and arrows, this suggestion is about leather and leather armor (and possibly also books).
A lot of people think of leather armor to be completely useless. Not only is it the weakest of the armors, but a lot of people believe that it is actually HARDER to obtain than iron armor! I mean at least before 1.8 it was still easy to obtain. See, in those days, farm mobs would respawn if killed, so you could just hunt down a bunch of cows for your armor and not have to worry about repopulating your area in case you need some more leather. But now... A single cow has a chance to drop 0-2 leather upon death and a full suit of leather armor costs 24 leather. So it would take around 16 cows massacred just for one suit of lousy armor. See what I mean?
So my suggestion is for an easier way to obtain leather so that leather armor could once again hold the title of "easiest armor to get". Instead of cows dropping 0-2 leather upon death, they would instead drop 0-2 hide. Hide is completely useless by itself but there is one thing you can do with it - turn it into leather! Placing a single hide in the furnace will cause it to turn into 4 leather. Now this is not too add realism to Minecraft (besides, as most of you probably know, one does not simply tan leather through a furnace) but rather to make it easier to get an early game armor.
So that's all for now. Please tell me what you think. Should more hide drop upon a cow's death? Should stuffing hide in the furnace result in less leather? Do you think this is a good idea? If not, please tell why. Thanks in advance.
I disagree with both the OP and KingTrygon's ideas. Both add an item that has absolutely no use except to be crafted into items that are already obtainable.
If they are going to do either of these, wouldn't it just make way more sense to increase the drop of Leather in the first place? It accomplishes all the same goals without adding an extra item,

Seeing as though you have to smelt the hide before getting the armour, isn't that even harder than now? Really, just make cows drop some more leather... 2-4 would be enough.
