Here's an idea for a block designed to break other blocks: the Drill Block.
This would be a block with a metallic drill texture on one side. It would have a fuel slot, like a furnace, but no input or out slots. When fueled, it would automatically break blocks that touch its drill face and drop them in item form (assuming they're not invulnerable and drop items). More durable blocks would take longer to break (and thus use up more fuel), while fragile blocks like dirt or sand would break quickly and use less fuel.
You could place blocks in front of the drill block by hand, or use pistons to automatically move blocks into place. You could do things like automatically collect cobblestone or have an automatic gravel-to-flint converter.
These are all very powerful abilities, which is why I think requiring fuel to power a drill, and requiring more fuel for tougher blocks is necessary to balance it for survival gameplay, instead of just letting you flip a redstone switch.
Also, for balance reasons I think it should only be able to collect items an iron pick could collect. So while it could slowly break obsidian, it can't collect it.
I know the idea has been thought on before, and usually is met with either disdain or lots of support. I wouldn't mind if this was added because I would almost never have a use for it myself.

I know there have been automatic block breaking ideas before, but has anyone ever suggested it need fuel to balance it out?
Fuel is easy to get though remember, plant some trees, chop down, done. Then we hook this new block up to a tree you keep planting, and a few hoppers to process the wood into fuel, negating the downside.
Correct me if I'm wrong, you can use lava as fuel. Where can you get lots of lava? The Nether, pretty much an infinite source of fuel. Since lava can smelt 100 blocks/items in a furnace, I'm going to a assume the drill block is going to last a long time before running out of fuel.

That consumes the bucket though. So the expense is really 1 iron per 33 (and a bit) items smelted, which means iron is standing in for about 4 pieces of coal. I don't think that lava buckets are a good fuel source, because I think iron is worth way more than coal/charcoal.
Also, the drill's fuel expense would work different than a furnace. Furnaces perform a set amount of smelting per piece of fuel. A drill instead just get fueled a set amount of time, and can mine different amounts depending on the hardness of the blocks put in front of it.
Obviously if it lasts too long, or mines too fast, that would make it overpowered. It would have to have a fair price.
Huh. I didn't notice that change. It used to consume the bucket too. Surprised they got rid of that.
Well...Iike Deonyi said maybe it'll only run on coal or charcoal. Makes sense since it's a machine, not just just a stone oven. A steam engine for instance wouldn't do that well if you poured lava into it!
Also, it's not that big an issue to let people automate cobble collection, even if lava can be used.

No it doesn't. http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Lava#Lava_Bucket
And wood/lava is a fairly cheap price.
