First off, more mobs. more decorative blocks, and if you are surrounded by at least a chunk of water, ocean sounds.
how about a larger squid for deep underwater? or seahorses? then add coral, underwater sea-villager villages, and better respiration enchants. More pics coming soon.
giant squid are like slimes, but without the splitting, just the sizes. seahorses are a literal interpretation of the name, (ride-able? special underwater saddle?) coral is food to reproduce underwater mobs and heal seahorses, and sea villagers are gilled turquoise cousins of normal testififcates. more levels for respiration enchants, to add to the underwater experience. water is boring. WE NEED MORE!

Not so much, but that isn't an insult to your thread. Again, I support just about all of that. So.. you know, just throwing some good news in there. Don't know about the seahorse riding though.
I think that most people are dying for this kind of update. I think that ocean sounds, more ocean mobs, and underwater vegetation is something that everyone wants. I do think that Mojang will put stuff like this in one day, considering how wildly popular it is among the community.
To get ocean sounds around a water blocks, we'd have to use damage values on those blocks to differentiate between "types" of water blocks:
- Ocean
- River
- Big Lake
- Geiser
- Source
- Still
- Marsh
We'll minimally at least Ocean + Other
Otherwise, you'd stand in a plain near say a pond, or deep underground in a mineshaft near a water source gushing from out of the wall, and you'd hear the ocean waves crash together? Ewwww that would not be so good.
