My suggestion is: letters!
I would be surprised if this hasn't been postet before, but I didn't find any earlier suggestions like this so here's mine:
I'm building a modern city in survival mode and would really like to place letters above my stores, hotels, museums etc. Of course you can place out blocks in forms of letters, but they will be kinda big. Too big to put above a regular sized entrance.
The letters could've been two blocks high, one block wide and half a block thick. They could have been placed in the same fashion as doors, except that they can be placed directly on walls as most other blocks.
The material should be wood, and hopefully we would see the opportunity to color the letters, the same way as clothing. The crafting recipe could be three wood planks placed vertically. The item's value(letter) could be picked when placed, to avoid 26 new different items.
At last you can have the option to make them glow, by adding either redstone or glowstone together with the crafted letter item.
I think the signs are way to small and you have to be pretty close to read. I would like the letters to be a part of the whole city aesthetics, making each store, hotel and so on more characteristic. Especially with colored letters.
I think this is an alright idea but builder's have adapted to not doing this technique , this idea is pretty much Microblocks.
Although I'm not familiar with Microblocks I get your point of view. Even though Minecraft players have adapted using the available items in creative ways, I still think this could be done without ruining the integrity of the squares that started it all.

I agree with you , I think this would cause no harm to the MC Community at all because it's so simple
Just remember, people in other countries play Minecraft too. They would have to make Chinese and Arabic etc.
Not necessarily. Tons of games have things that are only in one language or only in the common spoken languages. That being said I know of a way this could be done. But it would require it to be a Tile Entity and have code attached to have a GUI where you type one letter on a keyboard and it makes it into a 16x16 representation of that character. I just don't know if complex characters could be represented in a 16x16 space. But the game could use a 32x32 texture that looks like a 16x16 except when a character is entered I suppose.
