Ghost are only found in caverns and abandoned mine shacks. You can also find them in swamps, rarely though. They spawn in the day as they do in the night. They may also spawn in groups of two.
How Rare:
Like i said above, they are normal spawns inside abandoned mine shacks, slightly more rare in caverns, and very rare inside swamps.
Damage:
Ghost do 3 hearts of damage on easy mode. 5 hearts of damage on normal. 7 hearts of damage on hard. And 9 hearts of damage on hardcore. (They attack every .5 second.)
Movement/Attacking:
Ghost float around 1-4 blocks above the ground at all times (depending how high the top of the ceiling is. If there is not any room to float the ghost will appear to stand) even when attacking. That makes them difficult to hit. They also will shift from side to side when attacking. They can move right through walls (only one block wide). And will attack players up to 3 blocks away. When they are about to attack, they will "charge" at the player with a blood curdling scream. They attack by slashing.
And ghost can also fool around with buttons and levers, and rarely doors. If they see a button/lever they might press/pull it (that could be frustrating.) Setting off whatever your trap is. But when they press/pull an item, they cannot do it again. And rarely in swamps, ghost will open your door (mostly while your asleep) and haunt your house by trying to kill you. They also fly at a speed of 3 blocks every second. And if they see a player, they will ignore all obstacles in its way to get the player.

Ghost are transparent and grey in color. They look similar to the default "Steve" skin. The ghost found in abandoned mine shacks have chains attached to there feet, while the ones found in swamps and caverns do not. Yet the ones found in swamps have red eyes.
Drops/Crafting:
Ghost drop ectoplasm (when i say drop i mean puke out. Instead of just dropping stuff like other mobs, ghost puke out ectoplasm upon death.) It doesn't drop every time but its got a "0-2" chance of dropping. Its their only drop. You can craft ectoplasm to make enhanced bone meal, or ecto-blocks. (Ectoplasm is blackish/purple and slimy by the way. I changed it's color due to it looking to much like slimes.)

Enhanced bone meal works like bone meal before the update. It grows things in one use. (It looks like bone meal but purple) And, if you use is twice for a single plant. The plant will grow super sized its normal size (2x bigger.) Even mushrooms and jungle plants.
(You get 15 ecto-bonemeal.)

Ecto-blocks work like normal slabs, but are slightly transparent. Not invisible but transparent. (Its purple in color.)
(I took out anti-ghost enchantments. Ghost don't need enchantments due to rareness.) (Turned ecto-slabs into ecto-blocks. It seems more purposeful.) That will give you 4 blocks. Unlike other blocks, ecto-blocks can float in mid air!
Haunted Houses:
Haunted houses are structures were ghost can spawn. They are an uncommon find, but not as rare as temples. They are made out of a new kind of dark black wood called rotting wood. The haunted house is also 2 blocks wide (so ghost cannot escape.) I cannot explain how it looks well, but i will try. It looks like a big/tall house that has been run down for years. There are windows on the sides of the house, but the windows are made out of iron bars.
Inside the house. There are many random paintings. The ground is made out of black carpet and rotting wood. There are absolutely no lights in this house. (But ghost are the only mob that will spawn in it. Besides bats.) Yes, bats. They are every where in this place. There are several rooms in this house. It will take some time before you find the ghost-spawner room. Just put a light source so ghost cannot spawn, and wallah! No more ghost.
After that, if you haven't already, look for the chest hidden in the house. They can be under floorboards, paintings, or maybe just in plain sight. Every haunted house has at least 3 chest. 2 hidden and 1 in plain sight. Chest give you 3 things, all are random.
Reasons Ghost should be added:
Abandoned mines more of a challenge.
Adds more blocks.
Swamps more creepy.
Adds enhanced bone meal.
Adds ecto-blocks.
New kind of mob.
Caverns more of a Challenger.
Caverns more creepy.
Swamps more difficult.
And much, much more.

I love this idea. I just don't like the going through walls part. That means if you have a house in a swamp, there really isn't anything you can do you protect against ghosts.

Oh and i updated the move through walls idea. They only move through walls 1 block wide. So if you want to live in a swamp and be protected from ghost, make your walls two blocks wide.

Also, when you kill those Ghost, it should puke out Ectoplasm, instead of dying like normal mobs. Ectoplasm possibly only obtainable by Vails? I don't know, I'm just giving my ideas with this.

That depends on the story; sometimes ectoplasm is black goo, sometimes it's green, sometimes it's almost clear- it just depends on the writer's tastes. I think it should just be whatever color the ghost itself is, personally.
Like the idea, but don't waste an entire Spoiler box on small amounts of text.
It's obnoxious having to click through all of that.
Only thing you really needed it for was the Crafting detail.

Support. But, I think that Ghosts should only be added in a Normal or Hardcore MC world, because they might be too difficult for an Easy world. Just saying.

though I was thinking about the going through walls dilemma, to make it they avoid light at all tims so you gotta have light in your house to avoid them from coming in
I like the concept of the mob however not the actual mob. A ghost is sort of clique; why not a flying jellyfish or something? Or maybe a really jellyfish in water?
I don't really see the purpose of a mob which is really rare and its main use being to craft translucent slabs and bonemeal...

Also, translucent blocks don't really work well.
All in all, a solid idea but needs more work.
I was done when I read 'Flying Jellyfish'. You sir, just put the glitch into the game. That is an AWESOME idea. I can just imagine it now, the flying jellyfish boss, like your just travelling on land over night, you hear a terrifying scream.. and then you turn around to be greeted by the massive, death-like jellyfish boss.
And I am now on a tangent. Anyway, that is an awesome idea.
