I think it would be cool if there was a server command to give players in game titles that would appear before their name when they chat or when you look at them.
For example, you could give Steve42 the title of "Sir" and then his name would forever appear as Sir Steve42 on your server. Perhaps the title would also appear in a different color than the name, so it's easy to tell titles apart from player names like SirSteve42.
The server command could be /dub. For example, /dub [playername] [title]. And you could give players any title you want, not just nobility terms, like "Badass Steve42" or "Handsome Steve42".
And if players are annoying you, you could give them negative titles like "Moron Steve42." So you could use titles to reward or punish players.
They could also be used to delegate authority without giving actual powers to players. For example a player could be "Moderator" or "Volunteer" or some other term that shows they should be listened to.
You'd be able to change or remove titles whenever you want, as well as automate it with server commands.
Already possible and very easy with plugins and mods, but vanilla could definitely use titles.
It's technically possible through Scoreboard commands giving an objective named whatever title to a player, though I can't tell you how well since I'm on Single Player while testing.

Yes, but it's inconvenient and requires a good understanding of the scoreboard.

True. But almost anything is possible with plugins.
And now that Minecraft Realms is going to be a thing, it makes sense to de-mod as many nice features as possible, since I don't believe realms servers will support mods for a while at least.

Create an objective, set the display to "belowName", and give the player a score when they enter? You could even do it automatically using "/testfor [Playername]"
If you've already created the objective, it's not any more complicated than the suggested "/dub" command, I don't think.

You can only do it through use of scoreboards, which is confusing to many players.
