Minecraft could seriously use a way to better manage and control tamed mobs and/or control more of them at once. And by this I mean things like getting a large group of tamed cats or dogs to stand up or sit down at once with say, a whistle. Another command would be for wolves or others to move to a designated point. It would be extremely useful to check for traps ahead or the unknown presence of a hostile entity such as a creeper or sneaking player.
Also, it would be great to include iron and snow golems in the category of tamed mobs when a player makes them so they can be better used for defense. Some advanced options for attacking mobs like wolves and golems would be a guard mode, where they will stay and watch over a certian area. Kind of like a lead to a fence post but with a range option and an item that changes the list of mobs and players to be filtered as enemies and allies of tamed mobs (needs to be an item so you don't have to open a new gui for every wolf you have) and have an option to apply this to all tamed creatures you claim ownership to. Not to mention the ability to call off dogs from attacking your friend who just signed their death warrant with one left click.
While im on the subject of using mobs for coordinated attack and defense, a lethal ranged utility mob would be extremely handy, much more so than a snow golem trapped in a tower with cactus or fire under it to lure and slowly kill mobs. Perhaps it could be a clockwork archer, made of metal and gears, to provide area denial to hostile mobs.
Heck we could perhaps make multiple types of living machines like golems and gear based automatons that defend say, a 24 block area around where they were placed. So instead of wasting your time running around your big base to cleanup mobs or have a unsightly forest of torches (which by the way look god awful in snow biomes or during the day), you could build yourself a squad of mechanical knights that guard plots of your base for you and only need to be powered by coal, or tied into a machine that winds them up periodically.
As always ideas are only suggestions and the last paragraph is basically an attempt at wild imagination, if mojang can't or doesn't want all that mechanical manpower put in, maybe someone could make a mod for it.
These are all good ideas. But, as you said, these are rough ideas. Though they are good, you have to be more descriptive if you want them to be considered more. You have my support, but please try to give more detail.

I tried to give as much openness as possible to the idea for the sake of validity. Suggestions for new things work best when jeb and co. are able to add their own creative touch to it in order to make it belong. I don't want to make it seem like a demanding wish list made by some newbie, I want to give mojang moist clay over tough bricks.
You still have a point though and if I think of anything to add detail to it I will add it.

I like the ideas but I disagree with your reasoning for leaving it open. If the developers decide to use an idea, they will change it however they want regardless of the original implementation and how people wanted it. Take Pistons for example. In the mod they could move containers and throw blocks in the air. Lots of people liked that but Mojang remove both of those, causing a bit of outrage by the community. But people moved on.
I guess what I mean is, you should be as detailed as possible, but make it clear to us other posters that you are willing to change things if we give good reasons to and that none of the things written are set in stone and can be changed by you at any time, or Mojang if they decide to implement an idea.
After all, adding more detail means we have more to think about which leads to more and better ideas.

I totally agree. These are awesome ideas, but you do need to give a little more detail.

Then take note of how I just completely redid half the first post.
