It's for pushing or pulling items.
The Sweep Arm would be constructed like a piston but using slabs instead of planks.
The Sweep Arm would look like a piston but with a noticeably smaller piston "plate" (14 or 12 pixels instead of the full 16).
When extended, the Sweep Arm will ignore any transparent blocks in its way and pass straight through them without breaking them like a piston would do. The Sweep Arm would also push any dropped items in the block it's extending through so they end up in the next block beyond the extended arm. If the block beyond is solid, the items will either "squirt" out the sides (if possible) or collect as far from the arm as possible.
If made sticky (same recipe as a sticky piston), the Sticky Sweep Arm will "catch" any items in the block beyond the extended arm (including items which used to be in the block the arm travelled through) and pull them back one block when the arm retracts before letting go of the items.
Otherwise, the Sweep Arm behaves like a piston (can't push tile entities, pushes and pulls blocks, etc).
The idea is to make it easier to collect dropped items, for example from automatic farms.
Is this a good idea? Needs a better recipe? Comments?
This seems like a good idea, but there would be some major flaws in that idea......I can't think of any right now but there would probably be some!
If there are any, then think of them. Right now, the only disadvantage I can see is having Sweep Arms do the same job as pistons. But that part of the idea could easily be dropped without any problems. The ability to push and pull dropped items so that they're easily collected by a hopper without breaking pressure plates is more important to me.
I would suggest the blocks it can go through to be limited to pressure plates, buttons, levers, signs, torches (both kinds), paintings, item frames, snow, ladders, tracks, vines, leaves, grass, mushrooms, flowers, sugar cane, fire, cobwebs, redstone, repeaters, tripwire, tripwire hooks, wheat, carrots, potatoes, nether wart, lily pads, water and lava.
Basicly any transparent block and tile entity, except glass, half slabs, stairs, cocoa plants, cactus, piston, tnt, spawners, chests, glowstone, doors, fence gates, fences, iron bars ,glass panes, flower pots, portal blocks and dragon eggs.
The former aren't "in the way" of the arm or can be pushed aside, while the latter are "in the way" and are solids.

That works for me, too. I certainly wouldn't complain if it was implemented the way you've suggested.

Support. Because I could make drawers easier.
