Gold has been useless since Minecraft's inception. The tools break insanely fast and the armor is the worst. Gold items like clocks, golden apples and powered rails are nice. But I feel that gold does not get respected as much as iron or diamond because gold has little importance in the game. I have stacks of gold that I don't know what to do with. So that's why I have come up with a usage for gold that will be more of an endgame achievement , not making armor or tools better because for some reason everybody loves having crappy gold tools.
I'm saying that gold blocks be more powerful than iron or diamond or emerald blocks when powering a pyramid. For example a level 1 beacon with 9 mineral blocks only gives off a radius of 20, level 2 30, level 3 40 and so on. But when you use gold blocks to make a beacon It gives a +10 radius size and allows you to achieve a 60 block radius when using a level 4 pyramid, which cant be achieved with other mineral blocks. Gold blocks would also make difficult buffs(Regeneration) easier to obtain, so a level 3 beacon could obtain regeneration, where only a level 4 pyramid could.
Requirements for the beacon:
Must be constructed like a normal beacon
AND have 100% gold blocks.
Gold is not useless. You can make OP golden apples (OPples).
Powered rails are very usefull too.
Emerals are currency.
OPples are OP.
Armor and tools being useless does not mean that gold is useless.
Yes, after all gold only makes:
Clocks
Powered Rails
Weighted Pressure Plates
Glistering Melons
And from this, potions of healing
potions of harming
Golden Apples (Regenerates health faster)
Enchanted Golden Apples (Used to cure zombie villagers, or gives regen 4, fire resist and normal resist)
Golden Carrots (Triple original hunger)
And from this, potions of night vision
potions of invisibility
Star Shaped Fireworks
Beacons
Traded to villagers (you can get nearly any item from them btw)

Yep, gold is useless....no support.
You can sell it to villagers too! But normal golden apple cures villagers, not enchanted.
Since gold is a weak metal, (Even thought gameplay > realism) obviously it isn't good for tools or armor. I would like to the more magical properties brought out of it. And example, the beacon improvement, I wanna see more stuff like that.

Hey, if you want to make sure I saw what you said, quote me on it.
Dude, this is genius. The only complaint that I have is that if a gold pyramid would have the largest range of all, what's even the point of including the others?
I'll be honest, I don't think Gold is useless at all. While I certainly wouldn't mind this being added, I've never used a Beacon. From what I have seen and what I know about them, I have absolutely no reason to ever build one. So... sure, add it. I don't care.

I do think that gold tools should have better durability. Gold is harder to find than iron but has a much lower durability. How does that make sense?
Gold is actually a very soft metal in real life; you can actually shape and mold pure gold quite easily, even just with your hands. All gold used in jewelry is actually a gold alloy with other metals added in a such a way that it still looks like pure gold but is no longer malleable. Plus, rarity isn't related to durability (although I guess you were suggesting that since gold is harder to find, gold tools should be made to last longer to balance that out? Decent enough suggestion but I doubt gold tools' durability will change appreciably).

Gold happens to not be very durable IRL, and Notch decided to be semi-realistic with the gold tier. That said, gold is very heavy/dense (as well as being magical in Minecraft; better enchants and mining speed,) and should perform better than iron for the few uses that it does have (ability to mine ores that iron can, greater damage, and greater defence plus knockback reduction.)
I agree with everyones opinion, gold and lapis are becoming useless. Sure, lapis blocks and gold blocks are used for building, but just think, when was the last time you said, "Going to go mine some gold and lapis!" its all diamonds now, but I have noticed on a server, they call gold , 'budder' and it is actually used, the most used block on the server, actually! But more on the armour/tools side, they do last a very short time, but actually are more durabible, been proven to mine faster or on average the same as a diamond pickaxe.
There is my opinion, now, realise, awkward ending!!!!!!!
So, yeah..

But while I don't think gold is useless, I would really like to see something like this grant another use to gold:
