This is a great idea, I hate having to kill masses of chickens just to make a full stack of arrows. Another idea could be that chickens randomly drop feathers even when they are alive, similar to how they drop eggs.

If there was a way to get feathers from chickens without harming/killing them, I'd be in support of "shearing" them, but I don't think that reflects realism very well.
Yes, I know: gameplay > realism. However, this is one of those balance issues where I'd prefer the realism over the gameplay. I usually don't have any problem getting the feathers I need in game, and you end with up with food in the process, so it's a win-win.
