Gold coins are an item in Minecraft that are used as player currency. Below will be discussed regulations for coins, crafting coins, dollars, and counterfeit coins.
Coins are a player currency item that is an alternative to a more expensive emerald or diamond currency. Therefore they are really only useful in Survival Multiplayer (SMP), as they cannot be used in trading with villagers. By default, vanilla Minecraft SMP restricts crafting coins to server ops to prevent normal players crafting coins and altering a server's financial system. This can be changed by going into server.properties and changing RegCoinCraft from false to true.
Note: Although server ops can actually craft coins, it is much more advisable for ops to obtain large numbers of them using the /give command.
In SSP, coins cannot be crafted. This is due to the fact that crafting coins wastes gold and Redstone and that they cannot be crafted back to Redstone or gold. This can be changed by having cheats on and changing gamerule RegCoinCraft from false to true.
Coins can be crafted in Creative Mode. Coins and Dollars (Both real and counterfeit) are available in the Creative inventory. In creative multiplayer anyone can craft coins and they appear in everyone's inventory.
Some Creative multiplayer servers may use mods to remove coins and dollars from the Creative inventory and restrict crafting coins to ops. This is usually unnecessary, as player trading is almost useless in Creative Mode.
Crafting
Real gold coins are crafted according to this crafting recipe where G=Gold Nugget and R=Redstone dust.
G
GRG
G
This yields 5 gold coins.
The Redstone makes the coins more secure and slightly more valuable. It also prevents coins from being crafted back into nuggets.
Gold dollars
Gold dollars are the next level up from gold coins. They are also be used for larger player transactions. They are crafted from 9 gold coins in the crafting table. This yields a single gold dollar. A single gold dollar on the crafting table can be crafted into 9 gold coins. This applies to both real and counterfeit coins, however dollars cannot be crafted from a mix of real and counterfeit coins.
Note that as long as gold coins have been obtained, real gold dollars can be crafted in any game mode on singleplayer and multiplayer in vanilla Minecraft. This is because dollars are technically a compact way to store coins (which is often what they are used for) and don't change the amount of money in the system.
Gold coins and dollars are material items like gold ingots. However they cannot be used in crafting except for exchange between coins and dollars.
Counterfeit coins
Counterfeit coins look just like real coins and behave in a very similar manner. They even read the exact same in the hotbar and inventory. Counterfeit coins aren't really counterfeit beyond the code, rather they are a different kind of coin. They are only counterfeit if believed to be or if a server's rules say they are.
Counterfeit coins are crafted exactly like real coins except a gold nugget replaces the Redstone dust. This yields 5 counterfeit coins. They can also be crafted into dollars and the counterfeit dollars can be crafted back into coins. There are only three differences between these coins and real coins. This is how they can be told apart.
1. A single counterfeit coin can be crafted back into a gold nugget. A real coin cannot. Despite this, you still need 5 nuggets to make counterfeit coins. Note that counterfeit dollars are crafted into counterfeit coins which can then be crafted into nuggets.
2. Counterfeit coins and dollars cannot stack with real ones. Trying and failing to stack new coins with your stash of real ones is a sure sign they are counterfeit.
3. In vanilla minecraft, there are no restrictions regarding crafting counterfeit coins. Anyone can craft them, regardless of game mode, in both singleplayer and multiplayer. Note that some servers may have mods for preventing counterfeit coins.
All coins and all dollars stack to 64.
All coins and dollars can be obtained using the /give command.
Note that the Gold Dollars discussed here are an item in-game and are unrelated to real dollars.
I think I can summarize my feeling about this in one sentence: What's the point?
Your gold currency, being unable to be traded with Villagers, would be utterly useless. Emeralds are currency, and actually serve a purpose in-game. If the only purpose is to be an SMP player exchange, there's no reason to have it in the core game. Not all servers would need it, and the ones that would could easily install an economy mod. For instance, the Metallurgy mod's precious metals module adds several tiers of coinage and a mint to produce them.
I didn't even need to read the thread to know that this is pointless. What would be the point of crafting gold coins if you could just trade gold ingots, or diamonds, etc. Heres the thing, there is no point. If you do want something like this in the game, their already is. Its iconomy which is a plugin. No support-
Yes, gold coins, something that a thousand other games already use as currency. Let's just slap that overused crap in Minecraft because... just because. Not a very good first post there. We have Emeralds, which are original and probably won't be replaced by overused gold coins.
Please let there come a day where people stop suggesting this.

Hey, you there. Yes, you! Are you thinking about posting a suggestion on the forums anytime soon? If so, please read this before doing so.
Gold is too easy to get. And by "getting", I mean mining it, not being paid with some of it or acquiring it through selling something.
Think about it this way: how easy it is to "get" real-life money? But not by working or trading? Like, by printing it, maybe? WOW THAT'S ILLEGAL WONDER WHY!
In Minecraft while gold seems cool because of the unique 3-tiered nugget/ingot/blocks approach, but it is a standard that is too weak.
Even the Emeralds are relatively weak in that regards, but they are much less worse offenders.
Lets use proof by absurd example: Let's use Dirt as Money! Even easier to get than gold!
i.e. "easy to get" = "bad money unit"
A good money unit MUST be HARD to "make". So that the "government" has better control on it's manufacture.
Also, your "counterfeit" money should be the one costing LESS, not MORE, to make. Redstone is even more abundant than gold. And is a purely weirdly arbitrary choice too. Glowstone as a yellow substance would at least have made a little more sense.
The best '"money" system is either a dedicated economic plugin or mod, OR simply letting players barter.
I was about to reply to your other post about how easy it is to get wheat and trade it for emeralds, but then I saw this. I was relived to figure out you were joking.
OT: We already have emeralds, and if you want something that is easier to get, then just use gold nuggets or ingots.
I realize now that my idea is slightly overcomplicated. Emeralds are the survival currency. The idea was mainly for SMP server "fiat" currency that could be controlled by admins. But I have found an alternative.
Ouatcheur, on your bartering idea, some sort of player shop/trading system would definitely be a good idea.
Reduuun-duuun-duuuundant.
The only reasons emerald would be in the game is for currency! If you replace that with gold, we wouldn't have a use for emerald. That's what makes it unique.
I don't support gold coins. We have emeralds. My only complaint about emeralds is that they lack fine granularity. I'd probably support a suggestion for emeralds coins (or whatever you want to call it) which break the emerald into 9 parts therefore allowing for easier, smaller transactions.
Furthermore, I also don't support people complaining about necroposting...
To everyone: Please stop complaining about necroposting. It's better than the alternative which is a million redundant threads.

I use firework stars as money.
Or people could just use gold nuggets, ingots and blocks as currency, kinda like how TF2 uses scrap, reclaimed, and refined metal.
wait heres one "FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDOOMMM!!!!" ~Demoman
Okay, now try to recall on how hard it is to get emeralds.
Please let there come a day where people stop suggesting this.
I still think Gold would work best as a currency since it already comes in three base-9 denominations.
Use Gold Nuggets as Coins
Gold Ingots as Dollars
At least, that's how we always do it on the servers I play on.
Find a village. Harvest their wheat. Trade it to the inevitable villager who wants wheat.

I don't see the use for such a complex idea.
I was trying to.
Good job noticing me there.
