Many people want some form of an upgraded bow. So why not melee damage?
Crafting a bladed bow would be just like crafting a regular bow, but by putting 2 ore materials on the right empty spaces like so:
Doing this would add blades to the front of the bow.
Damage:
Adding blades to a bow gives it more melee damage, but no damage for arrows whatsoever. So that this doesn't just become an op sword and bow mixed, the damage is half that of whatever material's counterpart sword you use.
For example, a Diamond Sword can do 7 hearts of damage, so a Diamond Bladed Bow would do 3 1/2 when using it as a melee weapon.
This way even using a Wooden Bladed Bow would be better than using your hands, or a regular bow (Not sure about the regular bow part)
Durability:
Using a certain material for a Bladed Bow changes its durability. Again, so this isn't an op sword-bow the durability is half that of whatever material's counterpart sword you use. Using the bow as a melee weapon would lower as much durability as firing an arrow for every hit.
For example, a Diamond Sword has 1562 durability, so a Diamond Bladed Bow would have 781.
Right now a regular bow has 385 durability.
This way starting off with a Wooden Bladed Bow has the advantage of making one as a small alternative to a wooden sword on the first or second night, but a regular bow has the advantage of more durability.
With blades, now a bow can have the opportunity to have enchantments like Sharpness, and Smite, etc
This weapon is very balanced in my opinion because it is like a sword and bow combined, but can only do half of what a sword can when used as a melee weapon.
So this is an idea of mine for a type of upgraded bow, constructive criticism appreciated. Thanks!
You can enchant a book to get sharpness, and just use an anvil to appy it to a bow. It will increase melee damage. However, this would be better. Support.
Way too underpowered. 50% damage doesn't justify making this instead of having a sword AND a bow. In fact, come to think of it, because of enchantments nobody would ever use this, since you can get way better enchantments by enchanting a sword and a bow separately.
It seems really pointless. I'd rather have them add one gun that could be enchanted to act like other guns (like a shotgun enchantment or machinegun enchantment) rather than another type of bow. Anything like a crossbow or something like that is the last thing I want to see.
Bladed bows are obselete with the movement of the mouse wheel. You can just keep a bow right beside a sword. And I'm sure I just look like a **** for saying this, but even the idea itself seems ugly to me. It's just a bow with blades on it. ._.
Looks like somebody's been playing either Kid Icarus: Uprising or Super Smash Bros. Brawl...
Though this idea could use a bit of work, I do like the concept and thus support it in general. While it's true that you can switch to a sword quickly, if you get in a tight spot where you don't have the time or your sword breaks at the worst moment, SOME type of close-range weapon can't hurt. The main issue I see with this thing is that the arrow damage isn't changed, which is important because although it's a bow with blades on it, as wolfendoom pointed out, it's nonetheless an upgraded bow like you said, so I think of it as a weapon of luxury rather than something to use early in the game. I don't know if 1/2 the power of a sword is balanced, so I would suggest subtracting the sword power by two hearts, but to compensate, I think the arrow power could be increased by one heart per tier, with the range also increasing accordingly.
ProTip to spriters who want to make something like this: I wouldn't recommend putting edges on the limbs themselves, since they should retain some flexibility because that's how a bow stores energy for firing in the first place. Maybe the item sprite could be a bow with the blades sticking out of the ends of the handle, like the bladed bows in D&D for example: http://www.dandwiki....3a/Sw2db060.jpg

Oh sorry guys I guess i am still a newbie. I forgot you can basically enchant any item with an anvil and it will work as if it was a weapon.
Although I did like SkarmorySilver's suggestion where the bow still gets upgraded with other things like arrow range and damage.
(SSBB, btw hehe)
As for it being too underpowered I wasn't too sure how I wanted to go about this so I just went for half, I didn't want to get yelled at for it being too overpowered ;;
