Okay, before I start, please let me point out that yes, I know this has been suggested before. Please don't stick me with pointy, fiery bits of metal. But I do think I'm suggesting a few ideas for ships that haven't been mentioned, and hopefully you fine folks will generally approve of my ideas.
Everyone and their mother seems to want boats/ ships/ airships/ submarines. There have been countless mods offering these things, and even a few server-side mods, like "Ships" and "Movecraft." But the server-side mods are... well, there's no polite way of saying this... bad. There's a great deal of love poured into them, surely, but they're clunky and teleport ships around, and it really breaks the suspension of disbelief in all the wrong ways.
At face value, my suggestion has been heard before. Add better boats. 'Nuff said, right? But I have what I hope are some clever suggestions for how those boats could be implemented. To explain it, I'll walk you through the process of building a boat with this new feature.
Step I - Build the boat. Boats would have some criteria they need to have met; they can be built using any blocks/ items, with the exception of water (I'll explain later). They can only consist of a certain number of blocks, though this number would hopefully be pretty high (10,000, perhaps? Though the ships I've built are much smaller).
Step II - Craft a helm. For my less-than-nautical readers, a helm is the boat's "steering wheel." The helm would play two critical roles here; it lets a player control the ship, and defines what the ship actually is. When you place the helm, the game would look at every block connected to the helm, excluding water or air, and say "that's the ship!" That's also where the block limit comes into play; you couldn't turn the whole world into a ship, so you'd need to build your ship in the water (or do what I do and build a drydock, then fill in the water when you're done). The helm would be sticks in all four corners, planks at the top/ left/ right/ bottom, and an iron ingot in the center.
Step III.A - Craft Sails. If you want your ship powered by the wind, you can craft sail blocks. You'll need one sail block for every five blocks in your ship, and every sail exceeding that will increase the ship's speed. So, if you made a simple, small boat with ten blocks, you'd need two sail blocks to make the ship move at minimal speed, and each additional sail block would make it move faster, up to the maximum speed of ships (probably the same max speed as current boats). Let's say a 1:1 sail/ ship block ratio would give you max speed. Sails would be crafted with sticks on the top, wool in the center (different colored sails, woot!), and string in the bottom squares.
Step III.B - Craft Engines/ Propellers. If you'd rather your ship be powered by engines, you can craft those. One engine will power 1,000 blocks, so if your ship had 10,000 blocks, you'd need ten engines. Propellers can be placed facing backward for naval vessels, forward for airships, or both for vehicles that can travel by sea or air. You'd need one propeller for 50% max speed, or two for 100% max speed. Propellers must be linked to engines by redstone. Engines would be crafted with pistons in the center row, iron blocks on the top row, and two iron and one redstone (center) on the bottom row. Engines must be fueled like a furnace (coal, wood, etc.), and can be linked by redstone to a single/ double chest to serve as a fuel tank. Propellers are crafted as slabs in the four corners and one iron ingot in the center.
Step IV - Come sail away... That's pretty much it! ships would have buoyancy based on their size, and submarines might get items like torches knocked off when they submerge. Otherwise, any ideas you might want to add here would be more than welcome! I hope you guys liked my suggestions. I think quite a few people would love having real ships in the game, especially if they can craft them themselves, and with any luck these ideas might contribute to seeing that addition someday.
I don't mean to be rude but the "crafting your boat out of regular blocks and then piloting it" has been discussed to death already. Not always with boats, the same concept has been discussed with cars, airships, and simple moving houses. It is usually met with a lot of controversy because a lot of people like the concept, but it would likely be very challenging to code, not to mention laggy if done improperly. I personally don't see a need for a giant moving houseboat, I would settle for a simple two man boat that can have a chest put into it.

If you knew beforehand that this thread has been done before, you shouldn't of made this thread at all, because it can get locked for redundancy, and not only that, you openly mention even in the thread title that this has been done before. It's almost as if you're purposely breaking a rule and want your thread to be locked.

Hey, you there. Yes, you! Are you thinking about posting a suggestion on the forums anytime soon? If so, please read this before doing so.

Actually, not quite. I was making suggestions that have never been made before. I recognize ships have been talked about rather endlessly, but I was presenting original ideas into that mix, including crafting recipes, mechanics, etc. I didn't know there was a huge thread devoted to ships, but I do believe the ideas I'm presenting here are unique and worthy of being mentioned.
And myself being a former game developer, let me also state that there's no such thing as redundancy in community suggestions, not for any development team that truly cares about community input (and I do believe Mojang does). I once booted a moderator for yelling at a forum member for posting an idea that had been posted before, because the more people clamor for certain features, the higher up the priority list said features should be placed. The few kilobytes of data on the forum making a repeated suggestion pale in value to the metrics you get out of knowing what your community wants the most. Having said all that, I can appreciate thread consolidation; I just didn't know there was a thread like that, and again, the ideas I'm presenting here are, as far as I can tell anyway, unique in their specific details.
At any rate, I do apologize. And so long as the thread stays up (I hope it does), I would appreciate input on the actual ideas presented, and further discussion focused on that if possible.
