Summary:
Wall based remote sensors that detect movement and emit a redstone signal.
Crafted Similarly to a Daylight Sensor, only with a Spider Eye or Eye of Ender in the top middle slot. Using a Spider Eye gives it a range of 3 blocks around the Sensor, while using an Eye of Ender powers it up to a 6 block range. There would be a small eyeball in the middle of the sensor, which, for a bonus visual effect, would blink, close when there's nothing nearby, and open and track nearby mobs or players.
What it does is detect movement within a certain radius around the Sensor, and emit a redstone signal whenever something gets close. Great for alarm systems or traps, in that you can hide it up on a wall or around a corner. The redstone signal is directed out of the block behind the block the sensor is placed on, allowing for completely hidden mechanisms and circuitry.
I like the idea, it sounds similar to tripwire but I can see the difference. It would also be nice if this could be placed on the underside of blocks....
Pressure plates and tripwires are to be stepped on and this is just "get close and you're in trouble"
I'm... aware of that. It's kind of awkward and overpowered to have this strange magical eye work as a proximity device when there are nearly infinite possibilities with the redstone devices we have now. This magic eye almost ruins the point of most touch-based redstone things.

Not really. It just eliminates the need for pressure plates where they would be too conspicuous. As it is you can only use Smooth Stone, or Oak Wood Planks to conceal them. The sensor would allow you to use any material.

Yes really. Though I don't think concealing the pressure plate is that big a deal, you're correct there. Still, your magic eye makes tripwires absolutely useless because it'd be a complete upgrade.

Not completely useless. Sensors are a lot more expensive.

So, whaddya think?
That was sorta the idea. You could rig it to a Note Block and have it go off when something comes near.
