Don't get me wrong; doors do what they're supposed to do - close off spaces. It's just that we have limited options when it comes to using them. Wood and iron, and they're pretty much the same looks-wise. Oh, you can use hidden piston block doors if you want to get fancy, but they've got limitations too.
I've seen some other threads on more door options, which would be great, but this is about door size. Currently the only size option - 1x2x1, unless you do it French-door style, where it's 2x2x1 instead, and it's obviously two doors.
But what if you're making a castle or town gate, where the "doors" are supposed to be way-out-of-proportion BIG? Or are doing one of those big-scale builds where everything is 2x normal size for detail?
Enter the Big Door. It's just like a normal door, except twice as tall (4 blocks) and twice as wide (2 blocks). You obviously need a 2x4x2 space to place it in.
Recipe: [I] = iron ingot, represents hinges [D] = door, either wood or iron
[_][_][_] [I][D][D] = [BD] x 1 [I][D][D]
It looks like one of those old medieval solid wood doors with big hinges (no windows). As mentioned, you need to place it in a 2x4x2 space. The "hinge" will be on the block you're pointing at, and the other end will be away from adjacent "wall" blocks. Top view: [a] = any block above "floor" [m] = my current position [x] = floor space I'm looking at
[a][_][_][a] [a][x][_][a] [a][m][_][a]
gets you: [H] = door "hinge" [C] = door end when closed [O] = door end when open
[a][O][_][a] [a][H][C][a] [a][m][_][a]
The door will open away from you. Obviously, these placement rules allow control of the "direction" of the door, so double-wide doors can be made.
Yeah, it's a good idea. Not exactly the most exciting post in the world, I mean, it's about doors. Very similar ideas have been suggested before so I guess if we all decide to complain about the empiness that fills the inside of us when we think about Minecraft's boring doors, they'll finally implement it.
