Minecraft's variety of food is vary scarce, considering the options to choose from are little. I feel that a more extensive variety of crops should be added to expand upon the already free-world feel. As well giving players more variety of what they can eat and find.
New Crops
Tubers
To be honest, tubers would be more of a plant found to help increase the growth rate of a crop. Tubers are various types of modified plant structures that are enlarged to store nutrients. They are used by plants to survive the winter or dry months, to provide energy and nutrients for regrowth during the next growing season.
Tubers could be found by mining grass blocks, or regular grass. The chance of finding them would be a 1/100 chance by grass block, and 1/15 by grass, you cannot find them in solid dirt blocks or sand.
Using a Tuber on a plant is simple. You walk up to the crop, and right click it, placing the tuber with whatever crop it was. Now that the crop has a Tuber, it's growth rate will double. Tubers will now be removed unless you destroy the tilled dirt block it is inside. Tubers durability is 3, meaning that three crops planted on that tilled dirt block will gain from the Tubers affects, then afterwards it will expire and a Rotten Tuber will be harvested with the third crop.
Other various things with tubers are; They replenish one half of a hunger bar when eaten. The chance of finding a Tuber in tilled dirt in a village farm is 1/50. The Tubers would look like 3 small pink and white spheres, a better picture can be found on the Wikipedia page for Tubers. Tubers cannot be crafted. Villagers cannot trade Tubers, nor can they sell them.
Sorghum
Sorghum is a genus of numerous species of grasses, one of which is raised for grain and many of which are used as fodder plants, either cultivated or as part of pasture. The plants are cultivated in warmer climates worldwide. Species are native to tropical and subtropical regions of all continents in addition to the southwest Pacific and Australasia.
Sorghum would look like a normal sorghum plants ( Look up a picture ) and would be very common throughout the world of minecraft. At the moment Sorghum has no available uses. In the future it maybe be able to be crafted with another item to make Sorghum Syrup forPancakes ( If Implemented ). Sorghum seeds can be planted in the ground and take one and a half days ( with water and torches ) to grow.
Cucumber
The Cucumber is a widely cultivated plant in the gourd family. It is a creeping vine which bears cylindrical edible fruit when ripe. There are three main varieties of cucumber: "slicing", "pickling", and "burpless". Within these varieties, several different cultivars have emerged. Cucumber plants aren't rare, but they are not common either. They typically spawn beside a river, but have a higher chance of spawning besides a river that is in a forest, creating better life support.
Cucumber seeds are rare, you can only find them in dungeon chests, or any other randomly generated chests that are in minecraft ( Mine-shafts, Blacksmiths... Etc ). Eating a raw cucumber restores one and a half hunger bars. Cucumber can be crafted with a glass bottle filled with water to create a Pickle. Pickles restore three bars of hunger as well as removes poison damage inflicted on user ( if inflicted at time of digestion ).
Cucumber seeds can be planted in tilled dirt, and take two days to grow. Cucumber plants produce between two and four cucumbers per plant. Not found in village farms.
Pomegranate
Pomegranates are used in cooking, baking, juices, smoothies and alcoholic beverages, such as martinis and wine. Pomegranate are round, red shaped fruits that are considered a delicacy and several countries ( mostly Euro-Asian ).
Pomegranates in minecraft are first seen as red bud flowers in Oak trees. After two or three days the bud becomes a fruit that can be harvested, and drops two Pomegranate seeds which can be planted back on the tree like Cocoa Beans to be re-harvested. Pomegranates when eaten restore one hunger bar. Pomegranates can be crafted with a glass bottle to produce pomegranate juice. Pomegranate juice crafted with Sorghum produce Pomegranate Wine. Pomegranate Wine restores two hunger bars, and gives the user slight-increased walk/run speed for two minutes, as well as slightly blurs the vision after two or more are consumed.
Pomegranate buds & fruits are found on one in ever three Oak trees, making them not considerably rare but not ever so common.
Lettuce
Lettuce is a common vegetable used in many dishes. Villages, besides having just wheat farms, also will have lettuce farms that have rows of lettuce, just like they have with wheat. Lettuce, when harvested, produces one to two seeds. Lettuce takes two days to fully grow, and can be cut down in half with Tubers. Feasting on Lettuce restores half a hunger bar. The type of lettuce found in minecraft is commonly called in real life Romaine Lettuce.
If lettuce is crafted with a bowl, and cucumber, it will produce Salad. Salad restores four hunger bars when feasted on, and has a ten percent chance to increase attack for three minutes.
( This will be added on to as it goes. Please show your support by adding links to the thread in your signature. I would be happy if someone made art for these ideas, as well as a signature thing that shows support for these ideas.)
All of it's good, except for Pomegrante Wine, as we don't need alcohol of any kind in a kids game. Then again, a majority of kids I know play nothing but CoD. Other than that, support.

Thanks, about the Pomegranate wine. I don't think it's that bad, most people consider wine a more formal drink than typical alcoholic beverages. But, I do understand where you come from.

Salad would be awesome.
