Hello, everyone! I Google'd for "Minecraft suggestions" to find this forum section, because I just thought of a brilliant one. Now, I know that a "brilliant idea" might only be brilliant to the person who thought of it, but please, hear me out. I think I can win you over. I tried searching for this idea as well, and found nothing similar, so here we go:
I'm staff on an extremely popular Voltz server (modest, I know), and I can generally deal with hackers and cheaters quite easily. Plugins like CoreProtect make investigations simple (thank you, hard-working plugin authors!), but x-ray texture packs remain undetectable without long periods of spying on the player in question.
I've thought long and hard about a solution. My thinking process sort of went like this:
A command to return the name of the texture pack .zip file?
--No, you can just rename it...
Having texture packs uploaded to minecraft.net like player skins, where others can view?
--No, some of the packs are huge...
Having a command to send the texture files to the server?
--No, same problem. Some packs are huge...
Then, it dawned on me.
How about a server command to force a connected client to take a screenshot without the UI, and save it to the server folder? Server operators can then easily check if the client is using an x-ray texture pack, simply by viewing an image.
Probably the first decent suggestion i've read today. You have my full support!

Warning: reading the above post has been known to cause the following side effects: Uncontrollable rage, urge to smash your computer, screaming like an angry gorilla, desire to hire a gang of monkeys to hurl banana peels at Jdman1699.
Seems like it would work quite well. Would you ban any players who didn't return the screenshot? It would be easy to mod it so that it wouldn't take the screenshot. or even using a freecam hack and having it send a premade screenshot.
Not sure hwo to make a plugin out of this. It would be almost impossible. requiring some Client edits. Mojang should listen to hacking reports to. Support

Not a half bad idea. Alternatively, couldn't you just call the textures from the client that are the most likely to be made transparent like dirt and stone? Because the textures are separated now, you would only need to call 2-3 to make sure, and even a 256x256 texture is going to be a tiny size if there isn't any color data. I just tried it in Paint.net and a 256x texture with no color data is only about 1.6 kb.
