Summary:
So playing online is fun. What's not fun is people stealing your crap from your chests. your stacks of Iron, your hard earned Diamonds, your food and other valuables. All prey to crafty thieves and griefers.
Sure, you can get plugins to fix it, but those stuck on purely vanilla servers will be forced to go through great lengths to protect their items from thieves.
So, I propose a Solution to this predicament:
Locks.
Created by crafting an Iron Key (Place 4 Iron Ingots in an L shape) and using it on a chest, door, or furnace to place a lock on it. This would create a button sized Lock on the front latch of the Chest.
"But Leo, you magnificent *******, you, wouldn't that mean that people are able to unlock any lock with an Iron Key?"
Of course. Which is why you would be able to Dye the keys during crafting (Place it in the top right corner), to create Colored Keys that would create a Colored Lock only a key of the same color will unlock. Much more trouble to go through for a wannabe thief or griefer.
Chests would get colored latches
Doors would get colored handles
Furnaces would get colored doors
Of course Locks would be difficult to break, about half the time it takes to mine Obsidian with a Diamond Pick. It would also increase the "health" of Chests, Doors, and Furnaces that they're placed on.
To Unlock a chest/door/furnace, simply use the correct key on the lock, which will remove it and open the chest.
Use the key on the chest/door/furnace again to replace it.
This would also allow for objective placement in Adventure Maps. I.e. "Find the Purple Key to Unlock the Purple Door" etc.
Protecting your stuff shouldn't be a hassle, incredibly expensive, or require mods/plugins.
Which is why Locks would be a perfect addition to Minecraft.
Great idea, the only problem I see here is that anybody could lock your chest if you don't have iron yet, and stop you from getting into your own chest. Perhaps only the chest's owner can place a lock? Also perhaps each key has a code which corresponds to a chest somewhere else in the server, because on large servers, there won't be enough dyes!
In that case, I reread your idea and it is even more useless. Crafting a key is not that hard, only 16 combos. A griefer could make a few then try every one. Griefers could also just break the lock or chest thing.

Thoughts? Opinions?
The part you lost me was about the colors....
Just need keys that has to be used by the crafter.

Curse PremiumThat could definitely work. I just thought it might be neat to have colored Doors requiring certain keys for when making Dungeon/Adventure Maps.

Also, what prevents people just spamming locks over everything, locking you out?
You would lock your stuff as soon as possible, of course.
The locks can still be broken with sufficient effort, anyways.

Curse PremiumMy job here is done.
Lol.
There is limited space in the ender chest but it's true that your valuables are more secure that way.
