I think obsidian should have more of a use in minecraft. Yeah, it has been used in weapons in nearly every single mod I've ever seen. Instead of doing this, I've created an alternate system where it can be used to "power up", or augment, swords. Here is the initial smelting recipe:
Note this is only concept art, and the actual shards are very rough sketches.
Of course the obsidian would yield at least three of four of the shards. These could be crafted with blaze powder to form a fire augmenting stone.
Or with a diamond to cause it to form a water stone. (Pretend the diamond is lapis.)
Or with an ender pearl for enderman-like effects. (Note - there would be a limit on how far you could teleport.)
These, in a crafting grid, would be placed above the sword you wish to augment, and would yield a sword with the ability to use the powers of said infused augmenting stone. The attacks would have to be charged, and could only be used after a minute or so. You could interpret these into several different forms, each of which has their own special ability. These work sort of like enchantments, but on a much higher scale. They provide physical attributes to the sword, changing its appearance and function.
In short, these shards would give obsidian a purpose. They serve as magical upgrades to weapons. They would be crafted in the grid with a sword, to which extend they would act as an enhancer. They would bestow a power upon the sword, based upon whichever element you've given the obsidian shard. These would implement directly into the swords. Some ideas for attacks -
Fire - Ranged Fire Charge Attack/Fire Blast/Enflame Enemy on Hit (Like Fire Aspect)
Water - Can "drown" the enemy, basically giving the poison effect.
Ender - Teleport effects (has a small range)
Lightning - Smite with Lightning/Shock Attack (does not kill in one hit, depending on the mob)
Earth - Would displace blocks or lift the blocks from underneath the enemy
Good idea? Leave a reply! Feedback is always appreciated. Anything to suggest?
this is a really good idea never seen it before and maybe like a sapling one which makes you teleport to the nearest tree as i have never seen that and on most of my survivals i live in deserts or cut down all the trees so it would be very useful also maybe a one that if you trade with villagers and get a exp bottle then you can use that and the shard and get a augment that adds more xp per kill as i know many people have wanted that and at least i have never seen a mod that adds that
I agree with this, it should be a water bottle or something like lapis, unless the water enchantment with the current recipe can do considerably more than all the other ones.
I agree that Obsidian needs some more uses, but:
The ending effects and additions that would be placed on a sword are way, way, too over-powered. Obsidian isn't that hard to get, and neither are Diamonds, or Blaze Powder.
Here is what you are saying:
We get 2 items, that are relatively easy to acquire, and we give the power of lightning and teleportation to the player.
Do you see how this compares to the already implemented enchantment system? Getting 30 xp takes a long time to get, naturally. And then using that xp for little to no power compared to what you are suggesting here, totally overthrows the system.
Unbalanced. Over-powered. Belongs in a mod, not Vanilla.

he's got a point, what you should do, is make it so these only give a marginal amount of extra effectivness and make it so they are only effective on certain mobs, like the water one doing an extra 1-2 hearts of damage to nether mobs.

These powers would not be fatal, and (i.e. the lightning bolt) attacks would do only a few hearts of damage.

The water one could be changed, I agree.
True, true. I'll think on it.
