I just had a minor epiphany that might be a useful and enjoyable addition to the game: An enchantment that can only be placed on books called Translate, available in levels I and II.
The idea is that if you use a Translate-enchanted book to craft an enchanting table, you can finally read what enchants you would get for your selection. A Translate I will only show the base enchant or the strength (i.e. Unbreaking or ??? III, but not both), and Translate II would show both halves (Unbreaking III)
It can even go a few (optional) steps further:
1) Make Translate only available as dungeon loot, with a very rare chance.
2) Only Translate I books can be found, but placing two of them in an anvil can make a Translate II book for a few levels.
3) Translate could create an enchanting table with durability, making it desirable to only use it when hunting for a particular enchant, as the book starts to fall apart.
I very much like this idea, although revealing the whole of the enchantment may be a little OP. Maybe you can only get this enchantment if you get very lucky, and maybe it should not reveal the whole enchantment. For example, possibly the enchantment would read (in the table) Th?r?? I? or something, so the person does not quite know what they are getting, but can work out from the text that some sort of Thorns is going to be received.
Another option would be simply the type of enchantment is revealed, and not the amplifier. I do very much like the enchanting table durability, although that might get a little complicated.
Ottherwise, I really love this idea, and I'd love to see it in the game!
I agree it needs to be balanced, that's what inspired the idea of making it loot-only, and even then only the lowest level available.
I like the idea that NukeDuck has, that it's only a few characters that can be translated. The others can be that epileptic gibberish like in the End credits, perhaps. I'll add that idea to the poll.
No support. This would just be, craft table to get book. Enchant book. Make another table. Badprenup's idea is more balanced. Now, where did I put that link...
If you translate the enchantment table it ends up being random words from a list. The words are like : Wind Fire Forest
But then the enchantment ends up being Bane of Arthropods or something random.

I know that it's also displayed as Galactic Standard Alphabet from Commander Keen, but I mean this to let us hover over the selection and seeing a tooltip as though we already enchanted the item, so we know what we are getting. No one likes dropping 30 levels on a sword that only gets Sharpness I.
