now I don't know about you guys but I got quite abit of slabs and stairs that I don't use anymore and just pretty much take up space so I thought of the idea of being able to craft slabs and stairs back into blocks so you can be able to craft them out of something else.
To craft slabs just put 2 slabs horizontal next to each other (because vertical makes chiselled quartz and sandblocks) to get 1 block back. To craft stairs place 2 stairs vertical next to each other and you get 3 blocks back (this is still a full refund even if its half of what you originally crafted). No crafting table needed.
Ok yeah you can place 2 slabs on the ground as substitute blocks but what if you want to craft something else out of it? Stairs, once you finished your staircase and have left overs, the chances are you might never going to use them again. Also, what if for example you are making your base bigger out of brick, run out of brick blocks but have a stack of slabs and stairs you used from your last modification but don't need them anymore? You could be able to use them without making more brick blocks.
Or you want to make sticks out of wood but only got wood slabs left? Turn the slabs back to blocks then turn them into sticks.
I think this option could be useful in certain situations and since they are refunds you are not really getting anything more or less out of it.
When you look at the idea in a Tetris kind of way, it makes perfect sense. Although it's really not that big a deal. I personally just make 100% sure what I'll do with the slabs/stairs beforehand, but not everyone plays the same way. There's no reason for slabs to be crafted into a full block as you could place the two slabs on top of each other to "recreate" the full block as double slabs.
Of course not, unless you want to craft the slabs into something else other than a recreated full block.
If you have no planned uses for the slabs but need another full block, then just make the double slab block right then and there. If you plan to use the slabs for something else, then just... store them until they're needed. Where's the issue?
But stairs on the other hand could fully need that recrafting option
It's not "needed", but still a good idea nonetheless.

Hey, you there. Yes, you! Are you thinking about posting a suggestion on the forums anytime soon? If so, please read this before doing so.
I really wish this was possible. There's literally no downside. For anyone who would whine that "they could be spending that development time on other things", all it would take is a single new recipe (i.e. a single added line in some recipe list file). Granted it's one new recipe for each slab type, so that's a whopping 13 added lines, though that could potentially be taken care of programmatically. Hardly a serious time investment.
The fact that this is not already implemented says to me that it's a design decision, which is acceptable, but smells arbitrary and grindy.
