Currently, as you know, there is no real way to improve your basic passive mobs. I guess horse armor is being added, but what about your pig friend? Or Mr. Milkington, the old cow who lives just down the road? What about them? Well have no fear, because....
Basic Idea:
Basically, with this suggestion, 3 new ores would spawn in the nether. These would be thrice as rare as Nether Quartz, and with them, you can use them on passive mobs. These would give different improvements to the mobs, and overall, just be very, very useful.
But Withnothing, Nether Quartz is fine, how do these ores possibly fit in with Nether Quartz?
It's simple, generic commenter, because they are Quartz!
The three new ores and their effects as follows:
Citrine: A yellow variety of quartz, when fed to an animal, this will increase their food drop (Sorry sheep). I thought being able to increase the meat given out by the animal was a good idea, like exploding pigs in Minecraft 2.0. When fed Citrine, mobs will also get a little fatter (Minimally)
Amethyst: A purple variety of quartz, when fed to an animal, this will increase their secondary drop. Eg: Cows->Leather, Chicken-> Feather, Sheep->Wool, Pigs->Nada. Note that this will only increase their maximum drop of the material by one, otherwise sheep farms would be incredibly easy. When fed amethyst, mobs will get a little bit smaller (Don't ask me why.)
Smoky Quartz: A brownish grayish blackish variety of quartz, when fed to a mob, this will increase their....um...prowess. Basically, this will make mobs be able to breed sooner, and if fed to a baby mob, they will grow up faster. So technically, you could feed it to your wolf pup or cat, as they also breed. This will make starting a large farm easier. When fed Smoky Quartz, mobs will get a slight bit darker (Just enough to distinguish).
As you can see, these ores are very simple, and would be beneficial to farms. It would put another use for the nether, and increase the number of farms and passive mobs.
Note:
All ores:
Rarity: 3x nether quartz, one per vein.
Mining: Iron pick or above, speed of Nether Quartz.
Question: What do you think about passing these traits to future generations? Overpowered? Please discuss.

Well then, most if this concerns what they drop in which the Looting III sword would do just the same. No need for new ores just for that reason. I sort of like the last one, but why would animals be eating quartz? I could suggest feeding baby mobs a golden apple would make them grow faster. Sugar can make the in between breeding periods shorter.

I agree with this somewhat. I still think the idea is justified as far as food and secondary drops because Enchanting is based on luck so not everyone would have equal access to a Looting III sword, and if they did they might want to save it for hostile mobs. After all, breeding mobs is a passive venture that isn't hard or risky.
But that aside, feeding them ores makes less sense than the little sense Minecraft makes. If it was some other items found in nature that were a bit more edible I would like it more.
