I have not posted an actual suggestion in a while for 2 reasons. 1 because I couldn't think of one, and 2 I was waiting for it to be my 500th post.
*NOTE*
I searched the forums for something like this, and all that I came up with were vague suggestions and suggestions to make it like water. This will be neither vague nor like water
*END NOTE*
So, on to the suggestion.
Currently, you can only get large amounts of lava by running back and forth from a lava pool or a cave. This suggestion is a way to somewhat eliminate that.
Everyone here knows that you can make a cobblestone generator by using flowing lava into flowing water. This shows that cobblestone is a product of lava. So, to get the renewable lava, you make a 1 by 2 hole in the ground, and place a lava source block into the bottom of it. You would then proceed to throw cobblestone into the lava source block until another generates on top. (3% chance per cobble item). However, there is also a small chance (0.01%) that the lava will get too cluttered with cobble and turn into a cobble block itself.
Pros: This would allow a balanced (in my opinion) solution to getting renewable lava, plus giving another use to cobblestone.
Cons: Would possibly need a lot of cobble to do this
Last note:
Some of you are thinking "But what about my lava incinerator?". The answer: This only works on lava source blocks. Which means if you make your incinerator so that it is lava flowing into a hole, then it would work.
Too complicated
And you should keep in mind that lava, unlike water, is supposed to be a rare ressource
How exactly is this too complicated? Some redstone circuits are complicated, are you saying that they shouldn't be in the game? The process of enchanting is even more complicated then this. Should enchanting not be in the game? Also, note how it is a rare chance of it happening. Added a poll to see if the chance should be decreased.

Ever hear of something called running away? Its like running towards them, but without the confrontation and death.
This suggestion is redundant,
Lava is supposed to be rare,
and you are not supposed to duplicate lava.
And if you would duplicate it, why only use cobblestone, the lava would only get thicker.
I don't really see the use of this suggestion.
You do realize that this idea hasn't been posted in a while, correct? And that the ones that were posted were vague or like water, correct? Also, have you seen a post with this process? The cobblestone would go into the lava and melt. The chance of actually making it is minute, and I am estimating that it would take 100 stacks of cobble just to get 60-70 new lava sources.

Hey, no offense, i support this, but i don't really see it coming in vanilla minecraft,
as you can't give dropped items a use like this.
And the idea is too small to give dropped items such a use.
Still supporting though.
Hmm...it could be a bit of a challenge to get the lava to recognize when cobble is dropped into it, as it would require dropped items to have separate ID's...
Thanks for the support though.

define "rare". on my mc first day mining I discovered around 5 lava pools right next to each other (underground of course) . and then there's the Nether now please tell me how that's rare.
in fact I quite like this idea but its a bit useless seeing how common lava is already.
I mainly posted this suggestion so people don't have to go running back and forth between their house and a lava pool/the dangerous nether just to get the lava.

I'm not against the idea of renewable lava, but this idea seems a little complicated.
Wouldn't it just be easier if lava worked like water and a player could create a 2x2 square lava pool that's infinite regenerating? I know immediately people will claim it's unbalanced because:
1) You can get lava easier, but I argue you can get lava is easy to get now.
2) You can create obsidian easier, but so what? Obsidian is a pain in the butt to mine because it requires a diamond pickaxe and takes forever to gather even with an enchanted tool. It's not a pain in the butt because it's hard to find/make.
