What we need is a solid, full 1m block that damages entities on contact.
We have cactus but it's not a full block and you can't place them next to wall or each other.
There are possible proposal.
Netherstone: I can think of Hellstone from 2D mining game with RPG elements.
The Netherstone has the stone texture recoloured to red, with lava overlay. It damages entities if they step on block, doesn't damage Nether mobs. It can do 1 heart of damage per 1/2 second. Same harm speed as cactus but does 1 heart.
Touching the sides of Netherstone is harmless but standing on Netherstone hurts. Netherstone can be mined with Stone pickaxe or better, can be placed. If you have bucket, you can extract lava from Netherstone and turn the block into normal Stone and obtain bucket of Lava.
Like other blocks, you can place torches, doors and ladders on Netherstone.
Wearing boots will protect you from Netherstone, but it will cause the boots to lose durability.
The Netherstone doesn't set you and mobs on fire so no persistent DOT. (Damage Over Time)
Lava: No. Lava is a fluid and they can be messy to work with.
Fire: Sort of works, but it can set you on fire, causing you to lose further hearts.
Cactus: Sort of, but you can't place them anywhere, only on sand.
Netherstone: YES!!! A solid 1m block that can hurt, just like cactus!
Where can you find Netherstone? In the Nether, of course! It's about as rare as Nether Quartz. Maybe slightly rarer. Average of 30 Netherstones per chunk. There can be 1-4 clusters of Netherstone, from a measly cluster of just 1 block to a massive cluster of 60 Netherstones.
That would be a bit OP...
I mean this block damages anything and can be placed anywhere.
Let's not forget that it hurts the player as well! If you are not careful, you can get killed by Netherstone. Should an Enderman step on the block, the Enderman gets hurt and teleport away.
It only does 1 heart of damage. Mobs will try to avoid stepping on Netherstone. If they have no choice, they will try to pick the shortest distance through the Netherstone or go around it.
If destroyed by Ender Dragon, it hurts the Ender Dragon and the block is then destroyed with chance of being dropped.
Mm-hmm. Not bad, I support this. I'd make a few minor changes, though, for comparison with regular stone - converting it to regular stone and lava just by right clicking doesn't really make sense to me for some reason. Instead, mining the stuff could result in Nether Cobble, which hurts from all sides like cactus. Then you can craft it with a bucket to get regular Cobble while leaving behind a bucket of lava. Or you can bake the Nether Cobble and get regular Nether Stone.

Well... no. We don't need it as the game won't collapse without it.
Not a bad idea, but I'm not crazy about it either. I haven't decided whether I support it or not, but it sounds a tad overpowered. It'd make some traps way too easy, although that same thing can be done with cacti as well. Sort of.

Something similar, but not quite 'Netherstone.' Half support.
