Anyone ever play Minecraft pocket edition? Notice how small the worlds are. They run so fast on those little phones. I think that world sizes should be incorporated in vanilla Minecraft. It would be in the "world options" tab when making a new world. There would be a slider that would always start at infinite (which is default) and would go to 256x256 in block limit. This would make adjustable worlds and insanely reduce lag. It would probably be hard to code (or not) and it would make nice, compact worlds.
Pocket Edition doesn't have the near-infinite worlds because of the filesize limits. If you want limited map sizes, you can just play Classic. The current Minecraft map generation code has been recoded so much that map sizes aren't exactly an instant roll-back feature.

Hey, you there. Yes, you! Are you thinking about posting a suggestion on the forums anytime soon? If so, please read this before doing so.

Well, the world size thing would just create a wall (invisible of course) that would not allow any chunks to be loaded beyond that. This may cause caves and certain underground features to spawn incomplete, but it would boost performance on an epic scale.

I know what you meant with the world size, and sure, it would boost performance, but the map generation code has changed drastically since Classic, coupled with all the new features we've gotten. If performance is that bad, you can just lower some settings and/or use Optifine. Or get some upgrades, I don't know.
I never played pocket edition; wouldn't you run out of resources eventually and have your exploration be painfully limited?

Yep, same on X360 edition. It takes a while but it can happen.
To this idea, I don't support for the "it will run faster" reasoning that was given. Simply because it won't make it run any faster, at least not for the most part. The reason it runs fine on those phones is strictly due to the huge reduction in features. There are only about 60 blocks, compared to the ~100 blocks in the PC version. 9 mobs compared to the over 30 in PC Minecraft, the world height is halved, and the graphics are low and unchangeable.
I wouldn't mind the idea for making preset map sizes for challenge maps, but I'm going to rid you of the illusion that lowering the total number of chunks that can be loaded is going to do much to make the game run faster. We'd be talking an incredibly minor amount of performance increase at best, because the total number of chunks doesn't really matter, what matters is how many you load around you which is controlled by view distance.
The only way to make the game run noticeably faster by establishing a world size limit is by making the limit smaller than your view distance, so you literally never have to load or unload chunks. And unfortunately for the OP, the MAX view distance is 256x256, so his smallest world limit would give equal performance to playing on max view distance if you never had to load new chunks, so a world size limit above that is meaningless, and 256x256 would hardly make you run faster if you could play on max view distance anyways.

Side note - The size of the world makes nearly no difference in the speed of the game*. It would speed up world generation merely by stopping world generation. So if your problem is that your PC is too slow to create new chunks, then limiting world size would help, but that's a pretty harsh way to fix a problem.
A better option is to just play in a pre-generated world. Problem solved.
*Caveat - Yes, there's ways it can help, but I don't care to list them out and it's minor to most people.
Enjoy.
