Think about this, who is Steve? How did he get there? What happened to create the horrible creatures in the night? What did the Ender Dragon do to Steve to kill him? All of this is revealed in written books found in the inventory after an achievement is completed.

Ah... Steve, it has been so long! I hope you are well. Where is this place? This is Minecraft! You have been granted great strength. Punch a tree and hold it down. I will get back to you soon.
Punch a tree
Good, you also have the power to turn logs to planks. Try it now.

Hello Steve, I need your help! HE is after me! The...Dragon...It...Must...............
I would rather keep this game as story free as possible. While I do think there should be SOME kind of indication of some game elements, it should be kept relatively free of any narrative. After all, a lot of people wouldn't know the dragon exists unless they have been watching Youtube, been on this forum, or on the wiki, as well as following the Twitter accounts of the Minecraft devs. There should be some indication of there being a dragon, but not this whole long lost friend thing.
Also, Steve isn't even actually the player's name, Notch said it ONE time as a joke when he was saying that he doesn't even know what to call the player character:
The rest of the community just decided Steve would be the name then.

Please, no. Minecraft works perfectly without backstories and lore, because it gives that much more power for the individual to conjure up their own adventures. Also, there's gonna be players who despise whatever story is added. In this case, Permanent Mystery > Concrete Facts.
And no offense, but the dialogue you suggested that would be in these books of yours are kinda cheesy, lame and generic.

Hey, you there. Yes, you! Are you thinking about posting a suggestion on the forums anytime soon? If so, please read this before doing so.
The closest thing we have to a story is us.
Waking up.
Which of course can be really obvious for some as to what it means, Do more stuff in real life and stop playing games and fiddling with technology, Wake up literally in your bed in Minecraft, as if the life you just lost was a dream, etc etc.
Those were some really wise narrator(Endermen?) though.
By which of course I mean the ending Minecraft screen after the Enderdragons defeat.
