No other game that I play, makes you look up things on the web in order to play at a basic level. (I'm sure they out there but I don't play them.)
Suggestion:
Add a Crafting Book that would require some kind of quest to find. This should be a novice level achievement, so that once you have the book, There should be a blank page for every craftable item so that once you craft that item it is added to the book.
That way, at least, you know that is possible to craft things. There are a boat load of features in minecraft that one would never stumble upon accidentally.
This would be an alternative to adding the XBox crafting interface. (Yes, I know theres a mod for that)

Or maybe just add the Crafting Book button in the survival inventory. Click it, and a book will open. All existing recipes will have a slot along with their names beside them. The recipe is in ??? at first but once discovered, it will show the recipe there.
Also, maybe in dungeons, you can sometimes find special books which show recipes. If it is a new recipe, it will be added to your crafting book. There, now at least you can find all recipes without needing to guess all the time.
Oh and if the recipe requires a nether material, you can find the book either in a special nether temple, or just in nether forts.

I thought of some of these things too. How about adding occasional scroll drops from Zombies that give you crafting recipies. Villager Zombies might drop more advance scrolls.

Thank you for pointing these out. If and Idea is good more than one person will often come up with it.
If pages in the book were dropped as scrolls, it would give peoples something to trade in a multi player world. When all the pages of the book have been collected, it could be an achievement or add some other epic reward.

kind of pointless, I agree it can be annoying, and i start to play PC minecraft for 2 weeks and i play the xbox version for a couple of months and i know 95% of the crafting recipes, the only ones i don't know it the 1.5 recipes. to solve your problem is to remember them. plus the recipes or the same shape of the items

Some one asked "What is your most hated thing in Minecraft?" and I said having to look up crafting on the Wiki.
