Now that we are adding horses in 1.6, why not throw in camels as well?
They would of course spawn in deserts, but could be outfitted with chests or bags like the donkeys. Instead of Horse saddles they would have camel saddles, which would look more like cloths draped over their backs, and would be color dependent on the fabric used to make them.
Perhaps have a couple of them spawn in leashed to poles by Pyramids?
(I'm not sure how accurate it would be to have camel armor, The Persians had a sort, but it was mostly thick sheets of cloth)
Drops would be a new type of camel meat?(Maybe)(Wool maybe?)
Camel meat has been eaten for centuries by Greeks, Persians, Romans, and basically any middle eastern country.
(I'm just adding this idea because it is so similar to the horses addition, and would not be very likely to be added in an addition after this- When people aren't focused on this sort of thing)
While I wouldn't mind this being added, I really don't see a need for it. Everything that it does is basically covered more than well enough by Horses or other existing features.

Well, if the donkey is just an alternate skin for a horse, then a camel could also be an alternate skin. I don't see why not.
But then, if camels, then why not elephants? And if elephants, then why not llamas? And if llamas, then why not moose? And if moose, then why not rhinoceroses? And if rhinoceroses, then why not triceratopses?

I get the point you are getting at and I agree, but a donkey is not just an alternate skin for a horse. It has a unique model, restrictions from armor, and can have a chest. While it is close to a Horse, the mechanics are way different. But I still get the point you were trying to make. Either it is a redundant Horse or a redundant Donkey, or it can do both and makes the Horse and Donkey less valuable.

We don't need 3 mountable mobs. 4 if you count donkeys. Heck, one should be enough but no, people clamour for horses then get all upset when they DO arrive!
No support.

Horses die in the desert, and their hooves don't work well in the sand. Very strange.
