I've been thinking it would be really cool if there was a forest fire and then afterwards Stevie went around collecting all the charcoal. Of course, the actual process for making charcoal is a lot more complicated than simply burning wood. So it's not like every wood block destroyed by fire should become charcoal. That's why I'm suggesting a 1/200 chance.
Just log blocks? At first I thought yeah, but then why not any wooden block that gets burned by fire? At least it would be some consolation if your house burned down and you got some charcoal.

I think you are going to love my Survival Let's Play series on YouTube! It's called Spaceboot1's Garden. I make pretty things.
I think the number could be tweaked up or down, depending on playtesting. I just don't want charcoal to be too easy to get. Apples drop from decaying leaves at a rate of 1/200.
Also, think about setting a large jungle tree on fire. One click with a flint and steel = 5 pieces of charcoal.
But as far as I'm concerned, the hard limit is that it mustn't become more efficient than using your furnace to smelt the logs into charcoal.

Are you sure apples are that rare? I thought it was more like 1/80. I could be wrong, but dang! Those odds are crazy.
After it drops a coal it can possibly destroyed by fire and 1/200 is really the drop rate of apple according to the wiki, but i don't really like this idea cause i would not risk to run in flames for a coal or it might burn as what i said.

Leafeon used Magical Leaf!
There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers what the Universe is for, it will be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.
My thoughts exactly, it's useless after a coal popped out from a forest fire BAM! it will be burned and fade.

I think that the chance could be changed to 1/25. Would seem fair enough. Let the Charcoal be immune to fire.
Making one item immune to fire would be a pretty major change. Though I've often thought that many items should be immune to fire.
Anyways, I guess the way to solve the problem of items burning in fire would be to increase the drop rate, slightly. It's not like every charcoal will automatically burn. Some will escape the flames. Also, if the fire is daunting to run in and collect charcoal, just don't go. It really ought to be safer to cook up charcoal in a furnace, where it's controlled.
