(Note: Any type pickaxe can be used for these actions)
The pickaxe. 3 material and 2 sticks. Great for mining, gathering, and destroying. But then what? What do you do if you don't do any of these? You don't make a pickaxe, and you carry on. Well I'm here to change that with 2 new uses for the regular pickaxe
Pickaxe Throwing& Wall Hooking
Pickaxe Throwing: This one is obvious. Pickaxes should be throwable. To throw a pickaxe, while not highlighting any block (This is important) you "charge" the pickaxe by holding Right Mouse Button (RMB) and release it to throw. So you kinda throw a pickaxe like you shoot a bow. This is so you can hit a distant mob/player/block (I will be using this term alot) without using a bow or TNT cannon. Speaking of TNT, this can also be used to ignite TNT from a distance. Like the beginning of
The pickaxe will lose 1 durability if it hits the ground or a wall and 2 durability if it hits a mob/player, and it will also imbed it's self in the target untill you right click on the mob/block/player and pull the pick out of it causing 1 durability damage. But you can kill the mob/player and the pick will drop, having recieved no damage.
Damage-wise, the pick does the same damage as if you hit the mob/player and a half heart of damage when you pull it out of the mob/player. A player can also pull the pickaxe out themselves by pressing RMB. This is because with a pickaxe in you, you can't heal to full health, as evidenced by a wither poisoned looking section of hearts, the damage of a pick is halved and rounded up to the nearest half heart to get the stopped section of healing, if you're curious about values.
This can be used to
This is also what leads me into a new item for the game. Pickaxe With String.
Crafted like so.P = Pickaxe S = string - = Unused space
-P-
-S-
-S-
This is used so you can get your pick back out of a mob/player/block from a distance, causing some forward knockback, as well as a sort of grappeling hook. The item takes 1 damage on pull out and 1 damage per second you hang on it. The length the rope goes to is about 2 blocks at first, but can be extended to a max of 40 blocks by performing the same crafting recipe, but with the Pickaxe With String instead of a Pickaxe.
Wall Hooking: After so many comments, I have been motivated to finish the topic. It's time for my next idea. Wall Hooking.
To activate Wall Hooking, hold RMB while a block is highlighted with your pickaxe and you'll jump at the wall and hang onto it. As long as you are holding RMB you'll keep hanging on the wall. Controls are, W to move forward S to move back, A to move left, and D to move right. Shift lets you slide down the wall and space lets you jump in the direction you're holding (W+Space=jump up, S+Space=Jump behind you, so on and so forth.
This does have restrictions. You can't hang on dirt, sand, gravel, Just any thing that in real life is just a big clump of it. As well as bedrock and portal blocks. You can hang on obsidian if you have a diamond pick.
Durability wise. You lose one point per second while hanging (2 seconds if hanging on cobblestone and 4 seconds if there's a cobblestone block below you + hanging on cobblestone. To simulate Steve using the cobble as finger and foot holds.) You can also climb up a wall if holding on to cobblestone and there's cobblestone above you, just hold W.
You can also go into a wall hook from a thrown pickaxe. Just highlight the block with the pick in it and hold RMB.
That's all for this suggestion. Please leave positive feedback and ideas below. I hope to make more suggestions. So untill then, Bye

Wall Hooking: Coming Soon.
I believe it is a good idea, but I also believe it is a bit too much for Minecraft. It's like turning a simplistic game into a fast paced action. Even when the End, pistons, etc. were implemented, SOME people were outraged. on the other hand, some people thought it made the game much better. I know some people are going to disagree with me, but I personally believe it would be a bit too much. If you wanted this done a lot, I would ether make a mod, or request a mod developer to make it. Best of luck !

Thanks. I admit, even I think it may be a bit too much for minecraft, but what about mini-games that can benefit from this idea. Or adventure maps. Adventure maps would be totaly revamped with new obstacles, like Wall-Hooking, which is being thought on.
Although this is a great post for a newbie, no support. Pickaxes are used to get more material in order to upgrade, such as getting armor, swords, and shovels. If you are mining, just bring a sword. Like Muen said, pickaxes only get an occasional hit from mob surprises.

Your welcome While this, like you said, would be AMAZING for adventure mode. I can definitely see an Indiana Jones type game with this. But let's think about the technical part of this. When you craft the pickaxe w/ string, would it still function as a normal pickaxe would? It would be weird seeing how you would have a long piece of string tied to the end while you are still mining. I believe, if this idea were to be implemented, it would be a waste. You might as well have throwing and grappling hooks which I believe would be WAY too much.
Well he did say the ranged attack would only do a tiny bit of damage. It wouldn't make it too over powered.
Correct. The pickaxe will only do the damage it would normally do if you just swung it, heck, maybe led. A diamond pickaxe to deal the most damage (3 hearts) so you would have to throw a diamond pick 4 times to kill someone. And if they're in diamond, you are screwed. so this is best for weakened enemies or as a knock into a trap hit in terms of combat

How exactly a pickaxe is OP? It is not like you will use them for weapons.
They only do their job for mining and an occasional hit when you get surprised by mobs in caves.
See, There. That's why I started this thread. Sir, I salute you

However, I do like the idea of a grapling hook in the form of a pickaxe on a string.
I support.
