Okay, I am going to try and get this thought out, so please try and read at least most of this before shooting me down. I would like to get this idea liked by many, and hopefully enough so to be implemented in the game. I bought my copy of Minecraft during the beta. An open world designed for exploring and discovery is quite addicting. I played a lot.
Now everyone knows that diamond is the most rare, and strongest material. Finding and playing with all the resources of the game can keep one occupied for a long time, but diamond is what it is really all about It kept me entertained. Then I found it, used it, and got to that point where I couldn't really find anything else to keep we wanting to explore different lands or caves. Even the treasures in dungeons are full of things I can already make.
So my thought. And I'm sure many other have the same thought or close to. I just haven't found many threads with exactly my thinking. Minecraft could use more materials, deep in the earth, like diamond. Just as rare, if not more so. Materials that will keep you exploring long after you thought you were done. Unique items in treasures that you, as the player, could not make otherwise. I would just like to have that , "Oh, look what I found", feeling last as long as possible. And of course, magic. This I have seen a lot of threads about. I just want to throw my own idea of it in here. Just skip the end of this thread if you could care less about another magic idea.
There is the background of my thought. Now, here are those same ideas, just expanded upon.
1st, More Rare Materials. I like that diamond is hard to come by and is very rewarding when you finally do, but why do we only have one material like that? Lapis Lazuli seems kind rare too, but there isn't much in the way of things to do with it. It would be very fun to still have more to look for after diamond. And there is no reason that every rare material has to be at the bottom of the earth in some rock. Why not maybe an amber block a few spaces below pine trees? You could have something like quartz that appears in the open in some cave systems. These materials could still be just as rare as diamond. It would just be very fun to have other places to search in hopes of rarity. As for uses? I will leave that for my magic part of this thread.
2nd, Unique Items. I do find treasures to be kind of a bummer. The only reason is that I can pretty much find or make all materials in them. Aside from saddles. Why can't treasure be more like, "Oh wow, what is this!?", and less like, "Eh, I already have this, I'll just leave it." Treasures could contain things that, if I leave them behind, I will never see the likes again. Simple things. Maybe a torch that lights up a different color. A boat that maybe travels a little quicker. Perhaps a picture for a wall that you could not get otherwise. I'm not saying these things have to change the game to make the player crazy powerful or anything. Just things that are different and fun to find.
Okay.... Number 3, and the point for anyone that doesn't want to see another magic thread to head out. I just want to throw my idea for magic down. My idea will mix all that is in my thread here together. First part of this magic system will be the wand. Maybe you make it out of regular sticks, maybe it has to be from a certain tree, but you will need a wand for this system. Next, in the crafting area, you take your wand (which is useless in its current state) and place it with another material. (Ex. Wand on the bottom, Red Stone on top.) This recipe allows you to make something of your useless wand without a crafting bench, Also, I think the only materials used on a wand should be those that were mined. It is Minecraft after all. The thus created wand will give the player access to a spell. The wand would have a life bar, just like any other item. Again, these do not have to make the player crazy strong. Just enough to make the player want to go out and find new materials to see what wand could be created then.
Spell Ideas...
Coal on top creates the Fireball Wand. Mainly used on enemies, but has other uses. Works like flint and steel, but ranged. 5 uses.
Iron Ingot on top creates the Shrapnel Wand. Used on enemies. Acts like a bow and arrow, but with a more level trajectory. 15 Uses. Same damage as an arrow.
Gold Ingot on top creates the Growth Wand. Used on garden plants or trees. Every uses advances garden plants one stage in growth. Used on a tree and the tree will go up one more block, adding a new wood block at its base. 20 uses.
If amber existed, and you wanted to see what spell it created, you would have to first find a pine tree patch, followed by much digging, followed again by mining it up, provided you find it to begin with. (Rarity should be that of diamond.) There are many simple things you could do here that do not have to make the player crazy strong. Its just helps give us more to look for and discover. And a magic system like this would also help my treasure thought. Treasures could contain wands that the player just could not make. Spells that the player would not see otherwise. Wands in this scenario could be used to make the player alittle crazy strong, but they don't have to.
Okay, well, that's my thought. I am sorry if this is something you guys get sick of reading day in and day out, but like I said, I could not find another thread with exactly my thought. Thanks for your time all.
It Is Your thought.
But im afraid i have to say that this is a wishlist. You are naming multiple things you would like to see.
But the suggestion topic, you can only post multiple things ONLY if they are Really CLOSELY related.
Sorry. Plus you need to tell how to make this stuff. data about the stuff. you make the specifics of the idea, WE judge it.

I don't know, it seems to be pretty closely related. It is about finding more stuff to explore, and the ores and unique items both add that. But adding ores with few to no uses (I'm looking at you Lapis) is a silly idea, so the magic part is about what can be done with the aforementioned Amber, as well as some existing ores. But I suppose you could also consider the thread about new ores and making wands with them (and existing ores), so the unique item thing could be considered unrelated. I suppose it is how you look at it.
That being said, I'm not a fan of magic in Minecraft, especially not the wand "pew pew" kind of magic. The idea is fairly balanced and it isn't all like that, what with the growth wand. But I think it would be a better idea to only focus on unique items or on the ore/magic thing. Spreading yourself too thin in one thread is usually a bad idea.

I feel that all of these topics do fall under my initial topic. I don't think it necessary to separate them, as they work well together. I could change the topic title to say "Ideas" vs. just "an Idea," I suppose. And as to having all the details right now, I don't think thats how ideas work in a community.
First, you post an idea. Just something to at least see if people like the idea and would encourage further work. Like with this thread, if I can get enough people to like the basic thought process I have going, I can sit down and try to come up with a more detailed explanation. I don't want to get to much down as too many words kinda scare people away.
As for creating more materials with only one purpose, that is something I would have to work on. I really do like the idea with amber and how you would go about finding it. Just gotta look into some practical uses. A purely decorative building block is an easy one, but I am not a fan of lapis lazuli for that reason. Maybe it could be used in a recipe with stone to make wall pieces that are both decorative and stronger than plain stone? 2 functions.
Everything you're suggesting is oversuggested and just not needed at all. You say how you find some treasures to be a "bummer", but not every player will share that same opinion. I highly recommend you remove that magic wand stuff, because people have suggested the hell out of that and we already have enchantments as our magic.
Your suggestions to make exploration better don't actually... "make exploration better". You're just throwing in new materials and making most of just as rare as diamond. Even if these new materials were thrown in, you're probably gonna get bored of those too and once again suggest that more is needed. Exploration is pretty good as is, as we're getting horses, worlds are nearly infinite and we have two other dimensions.

Hey, you there. Yes, you! Are you thinking about posting a suggestion on the forums anytime soon? If so, please read this before doing so.
I've got an idea: treasure chests. They will be found on these conditions:
They can't be double chests.
They are most common on layer 32
Will have iron, gold (or butter) and extremely rare: lapis lazuli, redstone and emerald. Not diamond. Maybe other things like swords, armor and maps.
As rare as lapis (not exactly as rare as redstone or emerald), you may find enchanted items. Maybe potions.
