This should be in suggestions section, but, actually, it shouldn't, because Mojang doesn't read it and they are not gonna implement vertical redstone. Besides, this has been suggested 1001 times. (All AFAIK)
Just use a mod like VerticalRedstone, or red power 2. RP2 also I Claude's other redston devices like timers, state cells, cells, and other stuff, including red alloy wire, which allows vertical redstone
The whole point of making redstone things is sharing them with others, comparing notes, trying to come up with better designs etc. Using weird mods renders all that impossible. Not to mention you won't be able to use any of the creations you make using mods in multiplayer servers.
I also prefer to keep redstone vanilla only. Besides, once you start modding it, the whole thing becomes pointless because you can just make a block with your mod that does whatever you would normally use a large circuit for, which completely defeats the point of compact redstone.
At the moment, you can only send a signal upwards with redstone torches.
If you didn't notice so already, you can also use glowstone for that purpose by putting it in a checkerboard pattern like is shown below.
I'm thinking there should be another available method - beacons. There would have to be a receiver which would provide power if it detected an activated beacon below it, and it would cancel out the beacon's light from going above the receiver; not to mention using the idea of a light beam to power redstone sounds cool, mainly to adventure map makers. And yes, for those who ask, beacons are redstone-toggleable if you know how to do it. I have not made this into a suggestion yet, because currently, there isn't much more to it than that.

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers what the Universe is for, it will be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.
