i'm sure it's been suggested in some form before but with the new system for liquids i think it's time to have another go at it.
Quicksand would basically look like a (VERY SLIGHTLY) darker sand tile , and would be able to be picked up with a bucket. unlike water or lava it would not spread out, it would merely be a static liquid block, set to "flow" or pull downward. it would appear in jungle type areas once there are biomes and would form as 2-3 deep and wide block pits, and once submerged it would drain your air very quickly. it is very slow to move in so if you didn't notice it in time you would likely take heavy damage.
since you can carry it in a bucket, it could be used to make traps outside your base/castle/hut and would make it all that more difficult to navigate some biomes.

Would you dare to meet the gaze of the basilisk, or face the flames as the phoenix burns?
I like it, but I think it should be the same level as other blocks, it'd sorta break the immersion of OH **** QUICKSAND!!!! if you can tell it right away.

how bout it does the thing where you are being covered by sand?
where you lose health quickly
Nah, all you need is quicksand and carefully set up lava under it and any monster that gets trap will sink to their deaths. Monsters aren't smart enough to get out of a quicksand by the way.
I really like this idea. For balance, why not make it so crouching lets you move over it safely?
The safe way of getting out of/ moving across quicksand is by increasing your surface area, and since crouching is being planned, that'd be close enough for our purposes. It'd give players and lucky mobs a chance. Still dangerous if you don't pay attention.
Boats should be severely slowed by it, but otherwise be unaffected.

I was about to say something about real world physics and human buoyancy meaning that you can't actually sink below quicksand, but the I remembered this is Minecraft. Still, you should be able to tell it is quicksand, not regular sand.

Standing in it is still dangerous, since that focuses weight on one point and thus our buoyancy is not high enough to counteract the displacement of quicksand, which is why sinking when standing/walking in it would still work.
Quicksand should be darker than regular sand, but appear around reeds and other brush around it. If you're not paying enough attention it can still kill you.

Minecraft must NOT turn into the next WoW or Runescape.

Quicksand's more swamp than desert, isn't it?
