This has most likely been thought of, suggested, and already either been said that it won't work, or is already in the works but:
I like maps. They are good for getting around. What I don't like about them is that they take up inventory space and, relatively speaking, only show you a small portion of the world.
So I was thinking of a possible resolution to this:
An Atlas.
The way the atlas works is you, after filling up a map, place it inside the atlas. When you open the atlas up, it shows where you are (if you have the map for that particular location), or it shows nothing (if you don't).
Don't forget there are a few mapping programs that you can build to create an out of game map of your server. I helped put together an iOS app called MapCraft for those of you who use Minecraft Overviewer. (Dynmap support, Android both coming soon)
