Okay, so after reading a few things on the forums and visiting the clans page, something hit me. "Minecraft doesn't seem that sociable does it? I mean, you only get to meet people on one server or something, and once that server goes down, you never see each other again!" So, my suggestion is to make Minecraft more sociable.
General Layout:
All these lists and such will only be available through the MC launcher. There will also be an "online/offline" that will tell both you and your friends if you are online or offline. There would also be a PM Chat on the launcher so you can send a quick "Hi" to your friends, or maybe even a group PM.
Friends List:
We've all made friends in MC, right? Well, now you can prove it, by adding their user name to your friend's list. It will show what server your friend is currently playing, and if you are in Single player, will list you as "Single Player". Maybe it can also list what texture pack you are using.
Ignore List:
Now, there's always that player that is super annoying, and a jerk. Now, you can add them to your Ignore List! They will not be able to see what server you are on if they add you to their friend's list, and their chat will not be able to send you PMs on the launcher.
Clans:
This is a tricky one. Everyone hopefully knows of the clan page here on MCF, and its mostly a poorly organized group of people (little forms of communication to ALL members). So, one can start up a clan, and invite people into it (I'm thinking friends only). You can also edit the clan name and give people ranks (iffy on that idea). Finally, you can submit a clan cloak (like an MC skin), which can only appear to those in the clan (like an Optifine cloak).
Now this idea will need to flourish, and the community will need to help out. Feedback and ideas are always appreciated.
I support it all except for the clans. Minecraft just doesn't seem like a "clanny" game to me. But I think that a friends list has been needed for a long time.
This.....Is honestly the best idea i've seen in sometime. I've ALWAYS lost friends to a server going down or something within those lines.
The Entire idea is really good and I don't see anything wrong with it.
I think all of this is nice, except for the clans. Many servers have their own set of clans, and this would disrupt the isolation of each server. Moreover, Minecraft was not designed to have clans in every sever; some servers have factions, some don't

This is not facebook. There are no status updates. The only similarity is the friends list. Many multiplayer games online have some sort of friends system, so why not minecraft?

Ever hear of something called running away? Its like running towards them, but without the confrontation and death.

He's claiming that you can use Facebook, or some other friends site, in place of a friends list. Which you cannot, but it's all irrelevant since this thread is redundant. Veryredundant.
