As it stands now, it is rather difficult to make a relatively simple home defense system in Minecraft multiplayer. The best systems are large Redstone devices that could take hours to complete. Maybe you want a rather simple, yet somewhat efficient defensive device. That's where sentries come in. By investing your resources into this nifty little device, you can create a defense system without investing too much Redstone. However, it is rather weak, so it will not be too great without the proper upgrade components.

Sentries are OP!

I would've used a Minecraft recipe designer, but the website it down. Images and better recipes will be here eventually.
The Sentry
Here it is. The heart of the suggestion. The sentry is a simple device that will help defend positions from anyone that you deem hostile... to an extent. Sentries have a range of 26 blocks, but this can be increased with the right components. Additionally, they require ammunition. Without some kind of ammo, they cannot fire. But how do you craft it? Before you can, you need an iron hook, which is crafted like so:
[ ] [ ] [ ]
[ ] [ ] [ ]
[ ] [ ] [ ]
Blank cube = Nothing
Once you've gotten your hook, craft your sentry like this:
[ ] [ ] [ ]
[ ] [ ] [ ]
[ ] [ ] [ ]
Feather = Iron hook
Wood planks = Sticky piston
Iron chestplate = Iron block
To craft the basic sentry, you require a significant amount of resources. The standard sentry's appearance is a dispenser mounted to an iron-colored fence, with a thin sheet of glass over the front, and a small bow mounted to the top, along with a small piston with a tiny iron hook attached to the arm, hooked around the string. It would swivel on the pole in a 180 degree arc, searching for anything up to fifteen blocks away. Think of it as a mob that does not have the ability to move, but boasts a ranged attack. The sentry can only be destroyed as a player would kill a mob; attacking it. The sentry has 12 hearts (). Upon destruction, the sentry will fall to pieces and disappear, dropping nothing. By default, the sentry is not loaded and cannot attack anything. To load it, right click it. A GUI will open, with four buttons:
Upgrade: Attach upgrades to the sentry
Reload: Load an ammunition type into the sentry
Configure: Add names to the list of friendly players
Cancel: Close the GUI
Click the Reload button, and drag an ammo type into one of two ammo slots; primary, or secondary. Primary ammo will fire first. When that has run out, the secondary type will automatically replace the primary type. The same ammo type cannot be used in both slots. This GUI can only be opened by the sentry's owner. If anyone else attempts to open the GUI, it will be denied with the message "You do not own this sentry."
Ammunition
There are multiple ammo types that are compatible with the sentry. They range from basic arrows to much more advanced types of ammo. Here is a complete list of all ammo types compatible with the sentry's ammo slots.
Fire Arrow
Damage:
Speed: 1.2 BPS
Cooldown time: 1.2 seconds
Special effects: Ignites target for 3 seconds
Crafting: Torch and arrow (Shapeless)
Ice Arrow
Damage:
Speed: 2 BPS
Cooldown time: 1.6 seconds
Special effects: Gives target Slowness for 2 seconds
Crafting: Snowball and arrow (Shapeless)
Fire Charge
Damage: None
Speed: 1 BPS
Cooldown time: 2 seconds
Special effects: Ignites target for 4 seconds
Snowball
Damage: None ( to Nether mobs)
Speed: 1 BPS
Cooldown time: 0.5 seconds
Special effects: Knockback only, damage to Nether mobs
Glowstone Arrow
Damage:
Speed: 1.5 BPS
Cooldown time: 0.4 second
Special effects: Generates a light level of 8 upon landing
Crafting: Glowstone dust and arrow (Shapeless)
Upgrades
In addition to having two ammo types, a sentry can have up to two upgrades attached to it. Each upgrade changes the appearance of sentries appropriately. Here is a list of them.
Scope
Effect: Increases range by 10 blocks. Can also be attached to a bow to increase zoom
Crafting: Glass surrounded by iron ingots
Appearance change: A scope attached to the sentry's front
Extra Piston
Effect: Increases shot speed by 1 BPS
Crafting: None, just a standard piston
Appearance change: A small piston attached to the top
Iron Tips
Effect: Increases shot damage by , decreases shot speed by .2 BPS
Crafting: None, just an iron block
Appearance change: Shards of iron attached to the arrow in the bow
Reinforced Plating
Effect: Increases sentry health by
Crafting: A diamond surrounded by iron ingots
Appearance change: Darker grey color on the dispenser
Faster Arm
Effect: Decreases cooldown times for all ammo by .2 seconds, decreases shot damage by
Crafting: Sticks arranged in the shape of a piston arm
Appearance change: A smaller piston arm
Porthole Window
Effect: Increases accuracy by 10%. Can also be used decoratively
Crafting: Glass pane surrounded by iron ingots
Appearance change: A porthole window replacing the glass sheet on the front
Volatile Redstone
Effect: Sentry explodes upon being destroyed, dealing up to damage
Crafting: Redstone block surrounded by 4 TNT
Appearance change: A red light emitting from the sentry, with a light level of 2
Friendly Players
Clicking the Configure button brings a list of players the sentry recognizes as friendly. Your name is always on this list and cannot be removed for obvious reasons. This menu has two buttons; Add, and Remove. Clicking Add causes a text box to appear, along with a button marked Done. Input a valid name and click Done. If the name is invalid, you will be informed that the name doesn't exist. If it is valid, that user, regardless of whether or not they are on the server, will be marked as friendly. Friendly players will not be targeted by the sentry unless they attack the sentry. Clicking Remove will clear a selected name from the list. Hostile mobs cannot be added to this list. Passive, allied, or utility mobs are never targeted. Neutral mobs are only targeted if they have been angered by the sentry's owner.
Conclusion
Now that a sentry has been customized with ammo and upgrades, it's ready to deploy. Place the sentry wherever you want it and watch as it targets anything that isn't recognized as friendly. Sentries can be healed with splash potions of Healing should they require healing.
Pros:
Relatively easy to make
Can only target one enemy so it is not overpowered
Probably not too difficult to code apperance changes from upgrades (Armor layers)
Requires many resources so they cannot be spammed too badly
With Sentry Turrets Minecraft will ALOT remind me Strike Force Heroes 2!(Another great game). I would add here Rockets and EMP(redstone) rounds(weakening) as ammo .
YEAH WE WANT TESLA COILS AND ROCKET SENTRIES!!!
The concept isn't bad, although you should add some Redstone to the crafting recipe somewhere. That being said, this is so terribly weak they pose hardly any threat. They are slow, weak and have a maximum range of 25 blocks. With only 12 HP (6 hearts), two shots from an unenchanted Bow will destroy it. Their range at maximum is less than half of what a skilled player with a Bow can do, or you can just stand right outside their range and aim barely above it.
No support. Cool concept but bad implementation. Only an incredibly foolish player would get killed by one of these. Also to be honest it seems more like a mod than vanilla.

There is a lot of potential in this. However, as others have said, it seems like a poorly implemented mod. It needs to be simple, first off. Upgrades are out of the question: people don't want ten new items only to be used in one new addition. The hook required to craft it also seems pointless. No one wants new ammo types, I am sure that people would be OK with it shooting only arrows, fire charges, or other projectiles in the game.
I am sorry if I seemed harsh, but I just wanted to give you my two cents, as they say.
Thanks for your opinions, guys. Since you guys think sentries are underpowered, I've made them stronger. I was so worried about making them OP, I didn't know I was nerfing them into oblivion.

Ammo for Sentries should be simple,
Normal arrows
Acid Arrows(Poison)
TNT Arrows(Explode like 1/2 creeper)
and last: Redstone arrows(Weakening effect)
And that's all
Upgrades: You may guard sentry using fence posts covering its "head" and iron covering its "body", no other upgrades needed
Turret can be affected by potions. That means no attachable upgrades needed, throw potion of strength II, regen II, Invisibility I and it is done, you can make temporarily regenerative, really strong ghost sentry. Only using potions.
Naw, no support.
Why would you need an automated sentry? Walls work just as well and don't need ammo. So does cacti fencing.
For cases where you do need to kill mobs(mob farm, say), a lava blade or sufficiently tall drop suffices. So does dunking lava if you need to clear the walls.
If you DO need a sentry, snow golems are slightly ugly, but make for good lures for the aforementioned traps.
This isn't Mine Fortress 2. We already have Iron Golems and wolves that can do some of the damage for us. Absolutely no support.
I mean you gotta keep an open mind I guess. Like others said the concept is good.
If it's comforting to you reality is that very few ideas on this thread are ever implemented so yeah .
I must say though that defending yourself shouldn't be all about turrets especially in a game like Minecraft. At the very least this reminds me of snow golems being able to hit other players.
There's open mind, and then there's tf2 in minecraft.
I'd rather have block-grid entities, myself. Then you could make turrets to order, and ships to boot.
